JOHN F. OCt')l\lNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,-ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
CHAZY, NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE SIDE BEARING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoxson,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Chicago, in the eountyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable side bearings for railway cars.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable side bearing of simple and etlicient construction.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a body and truck bolster of a car, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the improved adjustable striking plate.
In said drawing. 10 denotes the body bolster and 11 the truck bolster swiveled at the center in the usual manner and provided on each side of the king pin with an ad-- justable. side bearing, each side hearing. as shown, comprising an upper roller member A and an adjustable striking plate B.
The roller member A comprises a supporting bracket 12, having flanges 13 riveted or otherwise secured to the body bolster. Oscillatably mounted in the bracket 12 is a cradle 14 in which is rotatably mounted an anti-friction roller 15, the aXis of the latter being at right angles to the pivotal axis of the cradle 14.
The improved adjustable striking plate B, as shown, comprises a base casting 16 having outwardly extended flanges 17 by which it is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the truck bolster 11. The base casting 16 is of substantially rectangular box-like form, having vertical end walls 1818 and longitudinally extending side walls 1919.
\Vithin the box-like casting, are mounted Speclficatien of Letters Patent.
tending side wall 21. which engages one of the walls 19. .\t each end of the block 20, a pair of spaced webs are provided, having intin'ned flanges 26 at the bottom thereof. the flanges 26 being inclined, as elearl indicated in Fig. 3 and forming with the walls 25 and the inner inclined wall 27, an inclined guideway in which is adjustably slidably-niounted a block 28 of substantially triangular construction.
The block 21 has hollow end portions 29, the upper faces of which are inclined or beveled, as indicated at 30. to correspond with the inclined lower faces on the block 20. transversely extending recesses 31 being provided through said hollow end portions 29 to receive bolts 32. the. head ends of which. are mounted in said triangular shape blocks. The bolts 32 are extended through the wall li and each has adjustably mounted thereon a nut 3 The hollow end portions 29 of the block 21 is connected by a longitudinally extending back wall ill and between this and the adjacent wall 19 of the base casting 16 may be placed one or more shims 35, by which the. position of the block 21 can be Patented Jan. 1, 1913. 7,

adjusted inwardly and outwardly, it being apparent that inward and outward adjust- 1 parts are held in their adjusted position by tightening the nuts 3;; on the bolts I claim:-
1. In 'a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a box-like casting adapted to be secured to a bolster, of adjusting blocks mounted within said casting, said blocks having inclined faces, a third block also mounted within said castingand having inclined faces cotiperating with the inclined faces of said first named adjusting blocks and provided also with a striking surface, and tightening bolts extending from said adjusting blocks through said third block and adapted to retain all the blocks in ad justed position.
2. A side bearing for railway cars comprising a base casting having an upstanding hollow box-like portion, a pair of blocks adju'stahly mounted within said box-like portion. one of said blocks being vertically adjustable and the other horizontally adjustable and having cotiperating inclined adjusting surfaces. bolts for holding said blocks in adjusted position, provision being made for the insertion of one or more shims between I I the horizontally adjustable block and a portion of the casting.
3. In a side bearin for railway cars, the combination with aase castin having a hollow box-like portion, of a %lock horizontally adjustable in said box-like portion, said block being provided with inclined surfaces on its upper face, a second block vertically adjustable in said box-like portion and having also inclined. lower surfaces cooperable with the inclined surfaces of the 1,252,295 p A A tion.
