RAILWAY-CAR ADJUSTABLE SIDE BEARING.
Application filed July 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway- Car Adjustable Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway car adjustable side bearings.
An object of the invention is to provide an adjustable side bearing for railway cars which is of simple and cheap construction.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a body bolster and truck bolster of a car, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2 and taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal. sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-1 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body bolster of a car and 11 the truck bolster pivotally connected thereto in the usual manner. On each side of the center pin connecting the bolsters, a side bearing is provided each of which comprises a lower bearing member 12 and an upper bearing member 13. The lower bearing member 12, as shown in this particular instance, comprises a substantially rectangular hollow casing 14 secured to the truck bolster by rivets the latter passing through webs of the bolster and flanges 16 of the member 141. Mounted within the casing 14 on trunnions 17 is a rocking cradle 18 the latter having rotatably mounted therein on trunnions 19 a roller 20, the aXis of the roller extending parallel to the truck bolster by which it is carried.
The upper bearing member 13, which is the one preferably made adjustable, comprises a rectangular member 21, preferably hollow, and, as shown, formed integrally with the body bolster 10. The hollow member 21 is provided with a central strengthening web 22 as shown in Fig. 2 and on its end faces is provided with series of notches Specification of Letters Patent.

23, said end faces being also perforated as at 24 to receive a bolt 25 therethrough. Adjustably and telescopically mounted on. the member 21 is a second member designated generally by the reference A. The member A comprises a wear plate 26 having upwardly and inwardly turned flanges 27 at each end thereof beneath which are adapted to be inserted the horizontally extending flanges 28 formed on the lower ends of the end faces 29, the latter being each provided with a series of notches 30 on their inner face adapted to cooperate with the notches 23. The end members 29 are also provided with vertically extending, elongated slots 31 to permit sliding movement on the bolts 25. The end members 29 are provided with right angled side flanges 32 which overlap the side walls 33 of the member 21. As shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 41, each end mem ber 29 is provided with a laterally extending lug 34 at the bottom thereof which engages in a correspondingly shaped socket 35 in the flanges 27 whereby lateral movement of the wear plate 26 relatively to the end members 29 is prevented while at the same time the wear plate 26 is separable from the end members 29 when the parts are taken down as hereinafter described. Between the member A and the lower face 36 of the member 21, are provided one or more removable shims 37, the number depending upon the position of the member A relatively to the member 21 and adapted to transmit the pressure from the wear plate 26 to the bottom face 36 and relieve the strains on the end walls 29.
As will be apparent, to adjust the wear plate of the upper bearing member 13 relatively to the roller of the other bearing member 12, the nuts on the ends of the bolts 25 will be loosened and the end walls 29 adjusted up or down to the desired amount, the proper number of shims 37 having first been placed between the wear plate 26 and the bottom wall 36, whereupon the nuts being tightened the parts will be securely held in position due to the interengaging notches 23 and 30. The sides 32 formed integrally with the end walls 29 of the member A prevent displacement of the shims 37, the latter being formed of rectangular shape to fit within the box-like arrangement formed by the end walls 2929 and the wear plate 26. By making the Wear plate 26 detachable fromthe end walls 29, the same may be readily replaced when it becomes worn and another substituted therefor without the necessity of replacing the entire adjustable member A.
I have herein shown one form of my invention and described the same in detail but the same is merely illustrative.
I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the details and arrangements of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and I contemplate all such changes and modifications as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a box-like member having a series of notches on the end walls thereof, of a wear plate adjustably mounted on said box-like member, said Wear plate being provided with end walls having notches cooperable with said first named notches whereby the wear'plate is adjustable with respect to the box-like member.
2. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a hollow box-like member, of a wear plate, detachable upstanding plates secured to the wear plate and adjustable on the box-like member, removable Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents shims, and nieans for holding said members in adjusted position.
3. In an adjustable side bearing, the combination with two telescoped members arranged to receive one or more shims therebetween, the outer of said members having walls detachably securedthereto, and means for locking said members in adjusted positions.
4. In an adjustable side bearing, the combination with two telescoped members arranged to receive one or more shims therebetween, the outer of said members havlng walls detachably secured thereto, and means for locking said members in adjusted positions, said means including bolts passing through said detachable walls and the walls of the inner telescoped members;
5. In an adjustable side bearing, the combination with a bolster, of two telescoped members having provision to receive one or more shims therebetween, the inner of said members being formed integrally with the bolster and the outer of said members having detachable walls, ing said members in adjusted positions.
