LATERAL-MOTION DEVICE FOR CAR-TRUCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 2 3, 1919.
Application filed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 280,254.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. BARBER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lateral-Motion Devices for Car-Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains 'to make and use the same. A
My invention relates to improvements in lateral motion devices for car trucks; and, to this end, the invention consists `of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, i i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car truck having the invention Vincorporated therein;
Fig. 2 is a View partly in elevation and partly in transverse vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view principally in transverse vertical section't'aken -on the line 1- 4f of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the combined sp-ring caps and roller bases;
Fig. 6 is a detail view in section taken on theline 6-6 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 7 is a detail view in section taken on the line 7-7 ofFig. 3.
Each truck side frame includes a top arch bar 8, a bottom arch bar 9, and bolstercolumns- 10 cast integral, 'one with the other. As shown, the bottom arch bar 9 is hollow and the top thereof, between the bolstericoluinns 10, is laterally extended on bothsides of the truck side frame toafford a base plate 11 having a centrally located annular open'- ing or hole 12 surrounded by an upwardly projecting annular flange; or-boss 13. The truck side frames are connected by a channellspring plank14, the end portions thereof rest on the base plates `11. The web 'or bottom of the spring plank 14 has an opening or hole 15, through which the boss 13 roi jects, and its top. is substantially flush with side walls thereof to afford pockets 18. Cast in the bottom of the bolster 16, within the pockets 18, are roller seats 19 in which rest anti-friction rollers 20 that support said bolster for lateral motion. These anti-friction rollers 20, in turn, rest in seats 21 formed in a combined spring cap and roller base 22.
Inter-posed between the combined spring cap and roller base 22 and a spring base 23 on the spring plank 14, is a group of four coiled springs 24. Cast with the combined spring cap and roller base 22, is a depending spring-retainingV flange 25, which caps the group of springs 24 and holds the upper ends of said springs in assembled position. The spring base 23 is provided at its two edges, which extend transversely of the spring plank 14, with spring-retaining flanges 26 that hold the lower ends of the group of springs 24 in assembled position. This spring base 23 is further provided with an annular opening or bore 27 in axial alinement with the bore 12 in the base plate 11 and of the same diameter thereof. It will be noted that the roller base 23 extends between the side Hanges of the spring plank 14 and is held thereby against turnlng moVe- By reference to F ig. 3, it will be noted that the combined spring cap and roller base 22 extends into the pocket 18 and that the anti-friction rollers 2O are held against endwise movement between the side walls of said pocket. Itwill be also noted that the ends of the roller seats 21 are open and spaced slightly from the side walls of the pocket 18 to permit free lateral movement of the bolster 16 and the escape of dust from said roller seats. The lower portion of the combined spring cap and roller base 25 is expanded and extends under the lower edges of the s ide walls oi' the pocket 18 to receive and cap the upper ends of the group of springs 24:.
With the combined spring cap and roller base pocketed in the bolster, as just described, it is impracticable to vertically guide the same in the customary manner, wherein flanges or lugs are formed therewith and arranged to engage the bolster columns as guides. As a novel means for guiding the combined spring cap and roller base 22, I provide, as shown, a pair of vertically disposed telescopically connected members located between the group oiI springs 2i. The lower or outerof said guiding members is indicated by the numeral 28 and affords a column and the upper or inner of said meinbers affords a stem ,29 integrally formed with the combined.. spring cap and roller base 22. The guiding column 28 is held in a fixed upright position, with respect to the roller base 23 and truck side frame, by in` serting the lower end portion thereof through the bore 12 in the base plate 11 and seating the same in a socket 30 formed in the upper face of the lower member of the lower arch bar 9. The guiding column 28 also extends through the bore 27 in the spring base 23 and holds the same against lateral movement-on the spring plank 16.
The guiding stem 29, as previously stated, is integrally formed with the combined roller cap and spring base 25 and extends into the colmnn 2S, with freedom for vertical movement, under the action ci" said combined spring cap and roller base By the use of the above described invention, it is possible to dispense with the bosses customarily formed on spring bases and caps and whiclrextend into the springs to hold the same in position. This means of holding the springs requires considerable labor and time to apply or remove the springs. By
the use of' my invention, wherein the spring bases and caps are provided with spring cappingV fianges, it is possible toV apply and remove the springs simply by acking up the bolster sufiiciently to permit the springs to be lifted over the flanges 26 on the spring base 23, and which fianges are relatively' shallow.
The customary flanges or lugs, heretofore referred to and used as a means for guiding the combined spring cap and roller base from the bolster columns, are objectionable in certain serviee,'for the reason that they would wear the bolster columns out. In my present invention, this objection is overcome by the use of the guiding column. By poclreting the lateral motion device within the bolster, itis possible to use a bolster with wide side flanges, which are now required in certain capacity trucks.
