My invention relates to an improved railway car truck assembly, and particularly to the type of truck in which a s ring cap and the bolster ends are mounte between the 8 columns of the side frame for vertical movement and where means are provided for limited movement of said bolster transverse to and relative to the car truck.
My invention is an improvement on the x10 typeof truck assembly disclosed in the pat-.
ent issued toG. S. Chiles No. 1,582,901 on May 4th, 1926, and my invention has for its principal object',-the provision in a truck of this type of flat bearing surfaces on the opposed inter-faces of the'columns of the truck or cooperation with flat side faces of-the holster ends, and for grooved portions on the inter-opposed faces of the columns at their lower portions for cooperation with the spring cap, to serve in the capacity of a vertical guideway.
Another object of my invention is to eliminate the stepped bearing surfaces on the 1 opposed inter-faces of the vertical columns at their portions which cooperate with the sides of the bolster, whereby the necessity for very accurate casting to. assure proper bearing fit on the various stepped 'sur aces is eliminated; and to provide an uninterrupted flat bearing surface at this location, together with other means for limiting the transverse movement of the bolster.
These and other objects are accom lished by means of the arrangement disc] in the accompanying sheets of drawin in which- Flgure 1 is a fragmentary si e elevation of the truck side frame, springs and spring ca and bolster ends all constructed lnaccordanoe with my invention.

The various novel features of the invention will be ap arent from the following descri tion and rawings and will be p'articularl pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that my invention is shown applied to a truck a which embodies a side frame 10, having the compression member 11 and the tension member 12 connected at their-intermediate pip}:- tions by the vertical columns 13 and 14. e upper surfaces of the tension member 12 between the columns is constructed to form a s ring seat 15 having the steps 16 and 17 at t e ends thereof, the spring seat having mounted thereon, the coil springs 18 and 19 in the same manner as disclosed in the patent above referred to. Mounted on the upper end of the spring is the spring cap 20, the under-surface of which is of a stepped formation so as to contact and properly rest upon the upper surfaces of the coil springs 18' and 19.
Referring to Figure '3, it will be noted that the spring cap 20 is provided on its upper surface with a plurality of elongated grooves 21 having arcuate bearing surfaces 22 adapted to receive the anti-friction rollers 23. The lugs are of such dimennous that they occupy substantially the entire width of the groove whereby they are held against movement transverse to the truck, but are free to move vertically in the grooves 32 and 33 acting as guidewa s by virtue of the elongated nature 0 the grooves. Provided on the bolster preferably on its upper surface are upstanding lugs 36 which are, when in their normal osition, spaced from the inter-surface of t e compression member of the side frames and which form stops for engagement with the side frame for limiting the transverse movement .of the bolster. It is to be understood that these lugs may be placed on the bolster in any desired position for cooperation with the side frame for limiting the transverse movement.
In practice, it will be noted that I have provided a truck in which the bolster is free to move transversely of the truck a limited amount while be ng firmly held against movement longitudinally of the truck by means of the bearing surfaces 28 and 29 which closely engage, the surfaces 30 and 31 on the sides of the bolster ends. In addition, I have provided a vertical guideway for pre venting transverse movement of the spring cap 'while permitting vertical reciprocation thereof under the action of the springs when the truck is in use. The lugs 36 serve in the capacity of stops for limiting the transverse movement of the bolster and they are initially placed in such position that they will .contact the side frame after the amount of movement of the bolster which is desired has taken place.
I have eliminated in my device, the necesfaces adapted to cooperate with a spring cafi and a fiat uninterrupted bearing face adapte to cooperate with a bolster.

In a railway car truck, a side frame having a compression member, a tension member, columns connecting said members, said columns extending upwardly and inwardly from said tension member and thence vertically upwardly, the lower portion of said columns provi ing a spring cavity, springs in said spring cavity, the vertical upper portion of each of said columns having a groove in their opposed faces and a flat uninterrupted hearing face located adjacent said grooves, a spring cap and bolster supported on said springs'and located between the vertical upper portion of the columns, said grooves forming stepped guiding surfaces for cooperating with the spring cap, and said flat bearing faces adapted to have contacting engagement with flat bearing surfaces on said bolster, the entire bearing portions of said bolster being of a width less than the distance between columns.
3. In a truck, the combination of a side frame including tension and compression members .and spaced columns integral therewith, said columns having bolster guides and spring cap guides, springs mounted on said tension member, a spring cap for said springs having portions cooperating with said sprin cap guides, and a bolster embraced by sai guides and having bolster guide coo crating portions, said bolster being supporte by said sprin cap and provided with an upstanding lug a apted to contact said frame for'limiting tran'sverse'movementof said bolster.

sity of accurately casting the bolster ends and the side frames to assure proper bearing fitthroughout the entire surface which is necessary in the type of device shown in the patent above referred to, and the trouble which is encountered when such parts are not accurately fitted in service. This structure makes for a greatly improved device of simplified construction and one which is considerably cheaper in that the extreme care in casting is eliminated, together with the additional labor necessary to make proper fits from the castings.
