ROPE-HANDLE-SECURING STAPLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN WEGWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Rope-Handle-Securing Staple, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in rope handle securing staples, one object of the invention, being the provision of a malleable cast iron staple, adapted to be used in connection with securing rope handles to hampers, boxes, baskets and crates, said staple being provided with piercing pins adapted to engage the body and pierce the strands of the rope to clamp the same properly against withdrawal, while the connecting portion of the staple embraces the rope handle adjacent its connection to the basket, and thus securely holds the same against withdrawal, the inner ends being clenched in any direction that is desirable in order to properly hold the staple against outward displacement.

A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a staple of this character, which while provided with piercing means for engaging the rope does not tear the strands, but enters between the same to properly hold it against longitudinal displacement when any weight or pull is thrown upon such handle.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, S designates the staple, which is preferably a cast malleable iron staple having the flattened terminals 1 terminating in the thin flattened points or terminals 2, there being provided two or more of the rope piercing and engaging prongs 3, which as clearly shown are provided with comparatively blunt points, such points being so constructed as to permit of the easy introduction of pins through the strands of the rope handle 6, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

In assembling the present staple, the rim 5 of the basket is preferably bored with two openings or channels 4 for the insertion of the terminals of the staple so that the flattened ends 2 may be bent outwardly and clenched as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 so as to bind the connecting portion of the staples to embrace the terminals of the rope handle while the prongs 3 enter the same not in parallel, but in a position so as to substantially converge toward a common cen- By this means, the terminals of the rope handle 6 are properly clamped to the rim of the basket against outward displacement, while the prongs 3 pierce the same without damaging the fiber and thus hold the terminals against longitudinal movement due to weight being thrown upon the handle in lifting a filled basket or hamper.
