BBOOM-CLAMR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented any is, 1916.
Application filed September 3, 1915. Serial No. 48,808. V
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, NORMAN H. Bauer: and IIARRY E. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Anthony, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, and Davenport, in county of Scott and State of Iowa, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Clamps of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in metallic broom clamps, and the object is to provide novel means for locking the clamps together for holding the broom corn in position.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in bottom plan of one of the jaws. Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation-of the jaws. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail'sectional view showing the formation of the means for fastening the jaws together. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the extensions on the jaws which are received around the broom handle. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view in perspective of the broom handle disclosing the groove in the handle.
A and B represent two clamping jaws or members which are constructed of suitable flexible metal whereby the corn or broom fiber can be securely held therebetween. Each jaw is provided with fluted edges and ends 1. The jaw A is provided at the ends thereof and along the outer edges with lips 2, 2, which are provided with hooked ends 3. The hook portion of each lip 2 is provided with an opening 4. The jaw B is provided with lips 5 similar in construction to the lips 2 of the jaw A, the hooked ends 6 of the lips 5 being provided with a projection or prong 7 which is adapted to enter the opening 4 in the lip 2, securely fastening the jaws together at the ends.
The jaws are bulged or made convex at the center thereof asindicated at 8 for forming a recess on the inner surface of the jaws for the reception ofthe broom handle 9. Extensions 10 and 11 are formed on the jaws A and B and are adapted to be received in a groove 12 in the handle 9. The extensions 10 and 11 are provided with hooked ends 13 and 14 respectively and the hook portlons 14 of the extension 11 are adapted to enter and engage the hook portions 13 of the extension 10. The hook portions 13 are provided with openings 15 in which projections 1'6 on the hook portions 14 are received.
When the fiber; has been placed between the jaws or placed upon one of the jaws and the other jaw forced down on the fibers for the purpose of connecting the two jaws together, the hooks 6 of the lips 5 are sprung into the hooks 3 of the lips 2 causing the projections 7 to enter the openings 4 for locking the jaws together at their ends. At the same time the hooks 14'of the extension 11 are sprung into the hooks 13 of the extension 10 and the projections 16 of the hooks 14 will enter the openings 15 in the hooks 13, thereby securely locking the two jaws together and any effort of the com pressed fiber to expand, will hold the hooks tightly together while the projections 7 and 16 in the openings 4 and 15 prevent the clamps from shifting from their relative position.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A broom clamp comprising two jaws having lips formed at the ends thereof, said lips provided with hooked ends, the hooks of one jaw adapted to enter the hooks of the other jaw, the lips of one jaw provided with openings and the lips of. the other jaw adapted to enter the openings of the lips of the other jaw for securely fastening the ends of the jaws together.
2. A broom clamp comprising two jaws having lips formed at the ends thereof, said lips provided with hooked ends, the hooks of one jaw adapted to enter the hooks of the other jaw, the lips of one jaw provided with openings and the lips of the other jaw provided with projections which are adapted to enter the openings of the lips of the other jaw for securely fastening the ends of the jaws together, extensions formed at the centerof the jaws provided with hooked ends, the hooked ends of one extension having openings therein and the hooks of the other extension provided with projections which projections are adapted to be received in the openings of the hooked ends of the other extension for securely locking the jaws to gether at the center.
8. The combination with two j aws having hooked ends, the hooks of one jaw entering the hooks of the other jaw for locking the ends of the jaws together, of extensions formed at the centers of the jaws provided with hooked ends, the hooked ends of one extension engaging the hooked ends of the 1 other extension for locking the jaws together at the center, and a broom handle adapted to be received between the jaws, and provided with a groove into which said extensions are adapted to enter to lock the handle'to the jaws.
In testimony whereof we our signatures.
NORMAN H. BEEBE. HARRY E. SMITH.
