SWIVEL-HOOK- $PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,979, dated July 18, 1905. Application filed April 29, 1905 Serial No. 258,114.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER J. HAVERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sayre, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a swivel-hook that may be used for various purposes, such as connecting the chain to the ring of a watch or applied to any purpose where a swivel-hook is found useful, said hook possessing strength and durability and simple in construction and effective in its purpose. The present invention consists in a swivelhook constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a swivel-hook constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the barrel, the swivel-ring and spring-hook being shown in elevation; Fig. 3,
a similar view showing a modification thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a tubular cylinder or barrel to the closed end of which is swiveled a ring a or other suitable means of attachment, the construction of the ring or attaching means being left entirely to judgment.
In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown the ring swiveled in the ordinary manner to the end of the barrel, and in Fig. 3 is shown the ring formed by wrapping one end of the wire around the shank of the ring, as indicated at b, to give it greater strength. The open end of the barrel A is dish shape or concave, as shown at 0, which forms around the interior of the barrel a circumferential shoulder d, which inclines at an angle in an inward direction to form a hear: ing for the catch 6 upon the end of a springhook B, the catch being on an incline to correspond with the incline on the circumferenti al shoulder of the barrel. The spring-hook B terminates in a spring-hook C, which is located within the barrel A, and bears with frictional contact against the inner wall thereof and is held within the barrel by the end of the hook at f abutting against the circumferential shoulder (Z of said barrel, which prevents thehook from being withdrawn.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings the two springhooks B C are reversed to each other, forming an S-shape spring device which has a slight longitudinal movement sufiicient to engage or disengage the catch 0 upon the end of the spring-hook B with the circumferential shoulder d upon the end of the barrel. The concave open end 0 of the barrel A acts as a cam for the incline catch 0 when pressed against the same, which will force the arm of the springhook B inwardly suiiicient to insure the catch entering the opening in the concave end of the barrel and engaging the bearing-shoulder d, and by pressing the arms of the spring-hook together the catch may be disengaged from the shoulder.
In place of reversing the spring-hook C, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the springhook may be formed as shown at D in Fig. 3
of the drawings, either construction being used.
Any swivel means may connect with the hollow cylinder or barrel for the purpose of attaching any object thereto, and the springhook that is located in the barrel may be of any preferred construction, such changes or modifications coming within the scope of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A swivel-hook comprising a barrel having a swivel connection for attaching thereto any object, said barrel having a circumferential bearing-shoulder at its open end, and a double spring-hook, one of said hooks located within the barrel and the other located outside the same and having a catch at its end adapted to engage the bearing-shoulder, substantially having an inclined catch at its end, substanas and for the purpose set forth. tially as and for the purpose described. 1 2.
