SNAP-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed my 29, 1904. Serial No. 218,764.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN PAUL HEIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay Shore, in the county of Sufiolk and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snap-hooks, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which will in practice be susceptible of ready engagement with a ring or other object, one which will be free from liability of becoming disengaged, and one which may turn freely relative to the chain or other element by which it is carried.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a snap-hook embodying the invention and showing the same applied for use on a chain. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hook. Fig. 3 is. a view of the blank from which the hook is formed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a snap-hook forming the terminal element of a chain 2, which latter may be of appropriate construction and material. The hook comprises a tubular head 3 and a pair of reverselyextended arms 4, oined at their inner ends with the head and terminating at their outer ends in curved portions or hooks 5, the arms being disposed in cooperative relation, as
shown, with the hooks 5 overlapping each other. The arms 4 are provided with openings 6, adapted to receive retaining-studs 7, fixed at the extremity of the hooks for preventing accidental disengagement of the hook from the ring or other object with which it is engaged.
The hook is provided with an eye 8, having a shank or stem 9, swiveled in an opening 10 in the tubular head 3 and upset or headed, as at 11, Within the latter, the eye being adapted for engagement by the chain or other element 2, to which the snap-hook is attached, and serving to permit a free swiveling movement of the hook relative to the chain.
The snap-hook is constructed from a sheetmetal blank formed, as seen in Fig. 2, by stamping or otherwise and which comprises a central head portion 3 carrying the pair of reversely-extended arms 4 and provided with terminal hooks 5, it being understood that in forming the hook from the blank the head portion 3 is bent to produce the tubular head 3 and to bring the arms into cooperative relation with the hooks 5 overlapping each other, as before described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A snap-hook formed from a sheet-metal blank having a central head portion bent to form a tubular head and a pair of reverselyextended arms carried by the head portion and provided with terminal hooks, said arms being arranged in cooperative relation with the hooks overlapping each other, retainingstuds fixed at the extremities of the hooks, the arms being provided with openings to receive said studs, and an eye having a headed stem swiveled in the tubular head.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
