HOSE-"COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 764,395, dated July 5, 1904. Application filed September 8, 1903. Serial No. 172,258. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK Swnnn and GEORGE L. FARNSWORTI-I, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Turtlecreek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplin gs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose-couplers; and the object of the invention is to provide novel and effective means for quickly and securely joining the two sections of hose.
Briefly described, our invention comprises I two substantially similar members, each of which is adapted to have a section of the flexible hose suitably secured thereto. These sections or members are each adapted to receive a nipple end of a sleeve which is interposed between the two sections or members and has an annular flange or ring adapted to be engaged by the catch-bars carried by the respective sections or members. These catchbars are moved out of engagement with the annular flange or ring, preferably by the employment of a spreader, which is left on the members when the latter are in theuncoupled position. 7
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved hose-coupler in the coupled position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the'socket members or sections, each of which has a corrugated nipple or extension 3 to receive the flexible hose (not shown) adapted to be suitably secured to said nipple or extension ends. These socket members are adapted to receive in their outer ends the nipple ends 4 of the sleeve 5, the ends of the socket members fitting against the annularshown.
shoulders or seats 6 of the sleeve and the sleeve being provided with a centrally-arranged peripheral flange or ring 7. Catchbars 8 are secured to opposite sides of the socket members 1 and 2, being secured by screws or pins 9, which pass through the catch-bars, near the outer ends thereof, and through spacing-blocks 10, interposed between the eatch-bars and the socket members 1 and 2. The catches 11 of these catch-bars are adapted to engage over the annular flange or ring 7. These catch-bars are made of material having suflicient spring to permit the catches being disengaged from the annular ring or flange, and this disengagement may be efiected by inserting a suitable instrument underneath the catch-bars to pry the catch out of engagement; but we preferably employ a spreader-ring 12, made circular in shape, with handles 14: at opposite sides of its periphery, and these spreader-rings are adapted to lie on the socket members 1 and 2, as These spreader-rings are provided on opposite sides with cams 12, and the rings are prevented from longitudinal movement on the socket members by headed screws or pins 14. in the socket members at each side of the spreader-rings. By turning the spreader the cams 12 engaging against the catch-bars lift the catches out of engagement with the ring or flange 7, whereby to permit the disengagement of the sections forming the coupler.
While we have shown and described our invention as it is practiced by us, yet it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hose -coupling consistingof a sleeve having a centrally-arranged ring thereon and socket members engaging over each end thereof, catches arranged on the socket members the catches of one socket member engaging on one side of said ring and the catches of the other socket member engaging on the other side thereof, with rings surrounding said socket members and having cams arranged on its periphery to disengage said catches, with means on each side of said ring carried by the socket member to prevent lateral movement of the rings.
2. A hose-coupling comprising a sleeve having a centrally-arranged ring thereon, socket members received on the opposing ends of the sleeve, catches carried by the socket members for engagement With said ring, the catches of one socket member engaging on one side of the ring, and the catches of the other socket member engaging on the opposite side thereof, rings mounted one on each socket member intermediate the front and rear ends of said catches, with cams FREDERICK SWEED. GEORGE L. FARNSWVORTH.
