Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application led September 2, 1913. Serial No. 787,767'.
To all whom 'it may concern: n Be it known that 1, KEMP MoDLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clio,
in the county of Marlboro and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which ,it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brooms, and one of the principal objects thereof is to provide means for easily and quickly securing broom material to a broom head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a broom which will be simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and capable of having any broom material easily secured to the broom head and without the use of skilled labor or of tools. v
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which like characters of lreference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, and in which,
Figure 1 represents a top plan View of a broom constructed according to my invention, a portion'of the handle being broken away, Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a broom, and Fig. 3 represents a vertical, transverse, sectional view of the broom.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the broom head 5 com rises al semicylindrical strip of metal having an opening 7, through which the vertical centrally thereof and near one end, through which an eye-bolt 6 extends and having its opposite en d provided centrally with a slot portion 8 of a bent securing rod extends, the horizontal portion 9 thereof having rone end provided with an eye 10 to form a pivotal connection with the eye of the bolt 6. Bolt 6 and portion 8 of the securing rod both extend up wardl through broom head 5 and lare threa ed on their upper ends for receiving thumb-nuts 11,-.whereby broom material 12' may be secured between the securing rod and the broom head, said. material preferably being constructed of corn husks, but it is to be understood that other material may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The diverging prongs 13 ofa steel fork pass through spaced openings near the inner edge of head 5, and are secured thereto by means of the inner and outer nuts 14 and 15 respectively, the body V'portion (not shown) of the fork being driven into the lower end of the handlev 16 of the broom, said handle being provided with a malleable metal ferrule 17 having an opening therein through which the bodyl of the fork extends, into the end of the handle,^so that a tight joint is secured.
Although l have shown 'eye-,bolt -6- `and portion 8 ofthe securing"rodfas provided with thumb-nuts, if it is so desired, bolt 6v may be securedvin position by means of an ordinary carriage nut. However, in either instance it is desirable to provide washers 18 between the securingnuts and the head of the broom.
Should it be desirable for any reason to remove the broom material and insert new material in its place, all that is necessary to do is to remove thumb-nut 11 and swing the securing rod on its pivot 10, whereby the material may be disengaged and new material placed on the rod, the latter being secured in thesmanner already described. In this connection it will be noted that slots .7 runs from one end of'body 5 inwardly, to
same, so that nuts 14 serve the double urpose 'of securing the prongs 13 of the ork and of providing means for preventing `the accidental removal ofthe broom material.
It will be noted that prongs 13 and handle 16 extend at" an angle to the vertical longitudinal plane of the Ybroomhead, but the exact an 'le` at :which Kthe handle projects from 'the head may beA varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The eye-bolt 6 and vertical portion 8-of the securing rod are positioned near the ends of body 5 so that the Ibroom material may be embraced between said bolt and portion, so that said materia-1 may not be re- 1.10
moved from the broom by pulling laterally ,of the same. l
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as do not de art from the spirit of the invention and tlhe scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,
A broom comprisin a head, a securing rod pivotall connecte with one end of said head and a apted to clamp broom material against said head, a handle, a fork secured 15 therein and having its prongs diver g and secured to said head, nuts threadeudn the ends of said prongs or securing the same to said head, means for clamping said material against said nuts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KEMP MODLIN.
