ADJUSTABLE HOE.
APPLICATION FILED APR, II, Ime.
INVENTGFI I f@ LUTOFIN EV neunten i IDANEEL ALBERT POTTOBF, OLE' MILTON, OREGON.
.lBJUETABLE HQE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. .$3 tijd@ vApplication filed pril i?, 1915. Serial No. 91,7539.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, DANUJL A. Perrone, o. citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Gregori, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hoes, of which the following is a specilication.
r)This invention relates to improvements in adjustable hoes, particularly out that type wherein adjustment Iin the angular relatively between the hoe blade and the handle is desirable.
' One object of the present invention is to provide a Jtour edge adjustable hoe oi' the above mentioned character which will permit of ready adj ustrnent between the handle and blade and is comparatively simple in construction and consequently economical to manufacture.
Another object of the invention. resides in the particular adjusting means which is in combination With the handle of the hoe and acts to secure the handle, ferrule and shank in fixed relation with each other and has a free end which forms the member permit-.
ting adjustment and may be moved for en gagement in any adjusted position.
Vlith the above and other objects in View, l Will'now proceed to describe o, specific einbodiment of the present invention `with particular reference to the accompanying drawings in which l have shown the saine.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a view, in perspective, 'of a hoe constructed according to my invention. Fig. 9; is a transverse section of the hoe shown in Fig. l but with.
the handle in the straight position perpendicular to the hoe blade.
In detail, the hoe, as shown, comprises a blade l having; suitable edges which may be beveled as shown. The hoe l has secured thereto by rivets or the like 2 a flange meer ber 3 which eornprisesa piece of metal bent double on itself to provide a protruding flange l and the lower ends of said piece of metal being bent outwardly in opposite directions to provide securing members 5 through which the rivets 2 pass or the meno,- bers 5 may be Welded 'to the blade l. Disposed on either side of the flange 4 are niembers 6 and 7 which converge as shown at S and meet in the shank 9 which entends wenn t tor@ io or. e einen@ n. irte members 6 and Y are pivoted to the flange -t as shown at 12 by means o" a rivet, bolt or the like.' On the lower end of the handle ll is disposed a ferrule 13 and a hole is drilled through the ferrule, handle and the end 9 of the shank. Through this hole a spring nvvire lll passes having one end turned over as shown at lo to insure the Wire being' xed 1n place. This vfire serves to holdthe ferrnle, handle and shank in the requisite fixed position relative 'to eachv other. The other end oiC the wire is bent downwardly to form an arm 16 thence inwardly et l? end at right angles as shown at i8 to provide en engaging end. rlhe flange e isA provided with a. series of apertures l5) which are :Ce-- dially disposed with respect to the pivot l2 oiz the shank. rihe shank .portions 6 and 7 are apertured and therefore as the handle ll is moved, Athe portion 18 of the spring ai'in 17 may be projected through the apertures in the parts 6 and 'Y and through xany one ot' the apertures 19 thus holding the handle and shank in a. fixed adjusted posi tion relative to the hoe blade.
While, in the foregoing, have shown e spccilic embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that,
in practice, l may resort to practical niodilications as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
l claim:
l. ln combination1 a hoe blade having; an attaching' flange, a shank pivotally secured ."nereto1 said flange having a series oi op ertures radially disposed with respect to the pivotal point of said shank, a handle having a iei'rule and having one end receiving' a. part or' said shank, and means innldinfr seid shank, handle and ierrule in lined relation relative to each other and having an end for engagement with any one oil? said apertures to hold said handle and shank an adjusted position relative to said blade.
ln combinationJ a hoe blade, an at tar-,hing flange comprising a piece ot motel bont double and thence outivardlv on either r I ,li side and secured to said hoe blade, a shank comprising an erin disposed on either iside ol said iiangc and pivoted thereto, @Said flange having; e series of apertures radially ibo spose. Wih zespee io ihe pvoa point of said shank, a handle having :1 e'ruie and having one end receiving :i pari; of sani io hold Saic hanle and shank in an adjusted position relative to said blade.
l@ In testimony whereof affix my Signashank, :md means holding said shank, handle ture in presence of *two` Witnesses.
\ and errue in .fixed reiat'lion'relative to each other and having; one end extending through Sii-:mk and 15s ohei emi positioned for engageiieiit Wih :my one oi said epeures DANIEL ALBERT POTTORF. Witnesses A. J. P. PLANT, G; A. COWL.
