ETAGHABLY CONNECTING A POST TO A BASE.
ADJUSTABLE MEANS FOR D APPLIUATION FILED NOV. 2, 1911.

TED STATES PATENT MATHIAS BACKES, 0F PETERSBURG, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE MEANS FOR DETAGHABLY CONNECTING A POST TO A BASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS BAoKEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Petersburg, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Means for Detachably Connecting a Post to a Base, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an ad ustable device for detachably connecting a pole or post to a base of concrete or other suitable material.
The object of the invention is. to provide simple and efficient means for removablysecuring a post or pole to a base and which is especially designed for connecting a wooden post to a cement base whereby the life of the post may be greatly prolonged.
Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure '1 represents a horizontal section through a telegraph pole equipped with this improvement; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the pole secured to a cement base by this improved connecting device, parts being broken out and the pole and base being shown of the same diameter; Fig. 3 is a similar view, the pole being of smaller diameter than the base; Fig. 4 is a similar view, the pole being of greater diameter than the base; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the sectional clamping bands forming a part of the device.
In the embodiment. illustrated a cement base 1 of any suitable length is shown with the greater portion thereof embedded in the earth, its upper end projecting slightly above the surface of the earth. this base 1 are a plurality of hinge members 2, any desired number of which may be employed, four being preferably used to insure secure connection of the pole and base as hereinafter described. These'members 2 are preferably constructed in the form of elongated metal plates or strips which are disposed obliquely in the base with their inher ends extending toward the center of the base and bent to form securing hooks 3 whereby said plates are firmly held against withdrawal after the cement becomes hardened. The upper ends of these plates pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

ject through the upper end of the base at or near the edge thereof and are provided with knuckles 4 for cooperation with corresponding knuckles on the complementary hinge members carried by the base of pole 5 which is to be connected with said base 1. These bases 1 may be constructed at a factory with the lower hinge members 2 embedded therein and the cooperating hinge members which are to be secured to the pole to be connected with the post may be shipped separately.
The hinge members 6 which are to be engaged with the pole 5 each comprise pivotally connected elongated plates orstrips 7 and 8 of any suitable or desired length, the lower section 8 being provided at its free end with a knuckile 9 which is connected by a pintle 10 with t-he knuckle 4 of one of the lower or base carried hinge members 2. The free end of'the upper section 7 is preferably pointed and bent laterally to form a pole engaging spur 11 which when the device is applied is driven into the pole 5 at a suit-able point to dispose the free knuckle carrying end of said section 8 ad j acent the lower end of the pole in position for connection with the knuckle end of one of the base carried members.
The upper hinge members 6 are securely clamped to the pole 5 by adjustable bands 12, two being here shown but any desired number may be employed. These bands are each constructed of separable adjustably connected sections 13 and 14 whereby the two bands may be made to fit poles of varying circumferences. 'The section 13 has one end 16 bent outwardly at right angles and apertured to receive a securing and ti htening bolt 15 which passes through a similar lug or bent end 17 on one end of the section 14. This section 13 is also provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 18 disposed equal distances apart for a purpose to be described.
The section 14 has an inturned hook 19 at the end opposite the lug 17 which is designed to detachably engage one of the apertures 18 in the section 13. This section 14 is also provided on its inner face with a laterally extending stud 20 spaced from. the hook 1 9 a distance equal to the spaces between the apertures 18 of the section 13 and is designed to enter one of said apertures when the hook 19 is engaged with another aperture whereby the band sections are securely held against longitudinal or lateral movement and are also thereby adapted to resist great strain exerted thereon, such as would occur when securing the band to a pole by tightening of the bolt 15 in the same manner employed in a turn buckle.
The construction of the upper or pole carried hinge members 6 in pivotally connected sections adapts them for use in connecting poles and bases of different diameters as is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. If desired when connecting poles and bases of the same size the lower sections of the pole carried hinge members may be removed but this is not necessary.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pole and base connector comprising a plurality of members, each composed of a base section adapted to be permanently mounted in a base with one end projecting therefrom, a section for detachable engagement with the pole to be connected and an intermediate section pivotally connected at its opposite ends with said base and pole engaging sections, and means for securing said pole engaging section to the pole.
2. A post and base attaching device comprising hinge members havin means for preventing their disconnection rom the base in which they are embedded and each having a knuckle at one end, detachable pole engaging hinge members each composed of pivotally connected sections, one of said sections having a knuckle at its free end for detachable engagement with the knuckle of I the base carried member and the other section having means for engaging a pole, and means for holding said sectional members in operative engagement with the pole to be connected.
