Description

yRANDOM) W. ivronns, oF JUDA, WISCONSIN.
.GATE-HINGE.
specmcation of Laersfratent. Patented June 20,1916.
Application filed Apri113, 1916. -S,eria1-No. 90,948. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLD W. MoHNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Juda, in the county of Green and State of Illisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and more particularly 'to farm gate hinges.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efficient hinge of this character for connecting a gate to its ost and preventing sagging of the gate.
Nith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a gate and its post showing this improved hinge applied; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the post engaging plate taken from the rear.
In the embodiment illustrated this improved farm gate hinge is shown connecting a gate G to a post P, and comprises a post engaging member in the form of a plate 1 which may be of any suitable or desired shape, being here shown substantially ovate in form with a plurality of screw receiving apertures 2, the screws which pass therethrough serving to assist in securing the plate to the post. Integral hooks 3 and 4 project from the end edges of said plate at diametrically opposite points and are designed for a purpose to be described. An arm 14 extends laterally from the front face of the plate, being formed integrally therewith and preferably provided at its base with a reinforcing boss 16. A threaded integral shank 15 projects laterally from the rear face of the plate 1 preferably in alinement with the arm 14 and is designed to enter the post P and extend some distance thereinto so that in connection with the screws 2 said plate will be securely fastened to the post. A pintle 17 extends upwardly from the free end of arm 14 to receive the knuckle 18 of the gate carried hinge member to be described.
v-DetachablyV connected with the plate are a pair of connecting and bracing arms 5 and 6, said arms being each formed of two overlapping sections as 7 and 8 provided with a plurality of longitudinallyV spaced bolt receiving apertures 9 through which connecting bolts as 10 are designed to pass for adjustably connecting the sections of the arms to adapt said arms to encircle posts of Varying sizes. The inner sections 7 of these arms are provided at their free ends with eyes 11 which are designed to detachably engage the hooks 3 andl of the Y plate 1 and the free ends of the outer sections 8 of the arms are' provided with outwardly projecting laterally extending apertured lugs 12 which are preferably arranged parallel with each other when the parts are in assembled position, and through which a clamping bolt 13 passes for connecting said arms to the post P.
The gate carried member of the hinge comprises an knuckle 18 made integral with a strap 19 and offset laterally from said strap with an abutment 20 at its inner end for engagement with the rear edge of the gate as shown in Fig. 1, a plate 21 being secured to said inner knuckle end and projecting at both ends beyond .said knuckle for engaging vthe gate edge` and thereby preventing the member from moving relatively to the gate on which it is mounted.
1 From the above description it will be obvious that in the use of this hinge the plate 1 is first engaged with the post P by screwing the shank 15 into the post and inserting the screws 2. After the arm sections have been adjusted to provide arms of a proper length for spanning the post to which the hinge is to be applied, the eyes 11 of said arms are engaged with the hooks '3 and 4 of the plate and the arms then clamped around the post by the bolt 13. The arms 5 and 6 of this hinge are here shown substantially semi-circular in form although obviously the shape thereof may be varied to adapt them to conform to the cross sectional contour of the post to which it is to be applied. After the plate has been so connectedwith theV post P, it is ready to receive the coperating gate carried mem ber, the knuckle 18 of which is engaged with the pintle 17, and owing to the rigid mounting of the plate 1 on the post and the strap 19 on the gate, all possibility of either of these hinge members being pulled down- Wardly by the Weight of the gate is avoided and consequently the gate is held reliably against sagging.
I claim:
A post engaging hinge member comprising an attaching plate having hooks extending from opposite side edges thereof and provided With a laterally extending arm on its front face, a pintle carried by said arm,
le an attaching shank on the rear face of said plate, connecting arms detachably engaged with said hooks, and means for clamping said arms around the post.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
RANDOLD W. MGHNS. Witnesses FRANK JENKS, BURR SPRAGUE.
