Description

J. W. HAYES.
I HINGE. APPLICATION FILED DEO.9,1912.
1,0?5J46 Patented Oct. 7, 1913.
UNITED @TATES PATENT @FFTQE:
JOHN W. HAYES, OF BAYLE CITY, ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
Application filed December 9, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNW. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bayle City, Fayette county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, especially designed for use in hang ing farm gates.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of hinge-members which may be readily formed and which may be applied to the gate by clamping instead of the usual nails or screws, and which may also be applied to various types and forms of posts either by nailing 01' by employment of a bond.
With the above purposes in view my in vention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in elevation a pair of hinges constructed according to my invention as applied for use; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a sectional plan on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 4 designates the uprights at the hinge end of the gate which are spaced apart in a common manner by the rails of the gate.
5 designates the U-shaped gate hingemembers, the parallel portions of which are provided with alining perforations, and the intermediate portion is provided with a pertoration.
66 designates yokes which are arranged to straddle the uprights l and are also arranged to be connected by a bolt 7 so that they be drawn together to clamp the gate hinge-member to the gate. The uprights 4 of an ordinary gate, as shown, are usually constructed of light boards, hence a securing to such light material by nails or screws in a common manner is unsatisfactory. The yokes may be secured to the up- Specificatien of Letters Patent.

rights without the employment of such screws or nails.
The post hinge-members proper comprise the spaced apart parallel and perforated portions 8 which are connected with the gate lingo-members by the pint-les 9, and the in tegral portions 10 at right angles to the pertions 8 which are to be secured to the post. The integral portions 10 just referred to are doubled over at their tops and bottoms to inclose the straps 11 which serve to secure the post hinge-member to the post.
In the form of straps shown at the top of Fig. l, the terminal ends of each of the straps are provided with integral loops 12 which are arranged to receive the wire bonds 14 which secure the straps to the post. By this construction, that is the looped straps and bonds, the post hinge-member may be secured to a cenientitious or metallic post.
In both forms shown the ends of the straps are provided with openings to receive such securing devices as nails or screws. This form of strap may be readily applied in an ordinary manner to a wooden post.
In order to prevent a movement of the post hinge-member around the post, both of the hinge-members and their securing devices are designed with especial attention paid to a construction which may be readily wrought from strap iron, pieces or sections of which are obtainable where farm gates are to be set up.
I claim:
The improved gate-hinge member, comprising a U-shaped hinge-member, a pair of yokes, a bolt for uniting the hinge member and yolzes, a second hinge member constructed of a single piece of strap iron, means for pivotally connecting the hingemembers, a pair of metallic straps secured to the second hingemember, loops at the free ends of said straps, and bonds for securing said straps to a post.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN W. HAYES.
lVitnesses:
ROBERT WILsoN, HENRY L. HAYNES.
