I I I r 1 I I a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. BANTA, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,116, dated January 3, 1893.
7 Application fi February 15, 1892. Serial No. 421.596. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY J. BANTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of (lass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts; and it has for its object to provide an improved fence post used in running awire fence which will be simple in construction, and all the parts of which will be light and detachably connected together so as to provide for an easy attachment of the posts to the wires comprising the fence and one which will withstand considerable strain and long use.
With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings;-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of fence constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved post used in running the fence. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings A represents a fence constructed in accordance with this invention and having the corner and gate post A, from which the wires B are run to form the various portions of the fence forming an inclosure said posts being modified forms of the main line posts to be described. Each of the corner and gate posts are constructed of suitable metal firmly clamped together and suitably secured by means of staples or bolts to the cross-sills B embedded in the ground, and braced to said posts by means of the diagonal brace rods 0. The corner and gate posts are angularin crosssection while the gate posts are further provided with suitable hinges to which the gate is attached, and both the corner and gate posts are provided with a series of polygonal winding drums D, mounted thereon and adapted to receive and wind the ends of the wires B, which may be thus tightened to any degree of tension desired. Intermediate of the corner and gate posts described, are located the main line posts E which receive and support the wires intermediate of the winding and tightening drums O. The said line posts E comprise the opposite vertical flat sections F having straight meeting edges G, and the lower out-turned supporting feet H. The out turned and fiat supporting feet H rest upon the bases or sills X, also embedded in the ground similar to the other sills B of the corner and gate posts and are weighted by rocks or other Weights to hold them in position. The said feet are securely bolted to the bases or sills X by means of bolts or suitable fastening clips, and the straight meeting edges B pass and on which they are supported. The
said opposite vertical sections F are securely clamped together by means of the transverse clamps K, bolted or riveted to each section, upon one side and the same are further provided with the straight and right angularly disposed notches L, formed in their meeting faces or edges, so as to accommodate the notched angular metal top brace L which snugly fits in said angular notch and is securely clamped therein by the clamped sections F of the posts. The said angular top brace L comprises a series of overlapping sections, the ends of which are firmly secured to the top of the corner and gate posts and form a firm top brace for the entire fence.
Adjacent to the openings formed in the meeting edges of the sections of said line posts are located a series of headed studs M around which are passed short stay wires m which also pass around the wires B passing through the line posts and thus serve as stay wires to hold the line wires in position. Each of the opposite sections F are further provided with a series of alternately arranged overlapping brace lugs Nwhich are riveted thereto at one 5 end on the side opposite the clamps K and overlap the opposite section and being arranged alternately upon the opposite sections prevent the edges of the post from rubbing together when strain is placed thereon or I00 from becoming displaced by undue strain as will be readily apparent.
It is now thought the construction of the herein described post claimed in the connect-ion specified is quite apparent, and I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the exact details of construction set forth, but reserve the right to make such changes as may be deemed necessary without departing from the spirit of this invention.
-Having thus described my invention, what Iclaini and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s;-
In a fence post, the combination with the base or sill and the fence Wires, of the opposite vertical post members having outturned feet at their lower ends detachably clamped to said base or sill, straight meeting edges provided with a series of registering notches forming openings for the Wires, and a series of headed studs adjacent to said openings, stay or anchor Wires passing over said studs and the wires, a series of alternately arranged brace lugs secured at one end to each section at its meeting edge and having their other ends overlapping the opposite section, and clamping plates secured to both of the sections to clamp the same, together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed iny signaturein the presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY J. BANTA.
