GATE-HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,272, dated June 17, 1890.

Be it known that I, CALVIN F. DARNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at'lndianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hi1] ges, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my said invention is to provide a hinge for supporting fence-gates, particularly adapted for use in that class of fences constructed with iron posts, by which the gate is securely supported, so that it may swing in either direction, and by which it may be adjusted to any position desired on: the post to which it is hinged, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view-in elevation of a gate provided with my said invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section on the dotted line 2 2 in Figs. 1 and 3; Fig. 3, a vertical section on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a detail of the hinge, showing half of the post-section thereof.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the post, to which the gate is hinged; B, the gate, and C C parts composing the hinge.

The post A is a metallic post of a common construction and needs no special description.

The gate B is of the form and construction fully illustrated and described in my other application of the same date, Serial No. 330,391.

The part0 of each hinge is cast on the corner-irons on that side of the gate from which the gate is to be supported, as shown most plainly in Fig. 3. It is provided with a central perforation for the hinge-pintle, which consists, preferably, of a vertical rod 0, extending through both hinges from top to bottom.

The parts C are in duplicate form, being semicircular, and thus adapted to embrace the post, and provided on one end with horizontal ears 0, formed to overlap each other, in which are formed the vertical perforations for the hinge-pintle, and on the opposite side with parallel vertical cars 0 having a transverse perforation for a clamp-bolt 0 The vertical perforations in the ears 0 are preferably formed on centers, each a little to one side of the other, so that the two holes will not exactly register until the two parts are opened out slightly, when the pintle can be inserted, and the parts then being closed together will grip the sides of said pintle tightly and prevent it from turning therein or from being removed therefrom. The adjacent faces of the simicircular parts are preferably hollowed out, leaving narrow edges at the top and bottom, which, when the clamp-bolt c is turned up tightly, grip the sides of thepost and rigidly clamp the hinge thereon, and thus afford a firm support for the gate. By means of this construction the pintle on which the gate turns is held rigid and firm to position and prevented from rattling or being accidently removed, and the hinges are so held on the post that by loosening the clamp-bolt they may be raised or lowered, as desired, thus permitting the gate to be raised in the winter-time, out of the reachof ice and snow, and lowered in summer, when it is desired to have it near the ground. A common form of catch is provided on the opposite side of the gate, adapted to hold it when closed and permit it to be opened in either direct-ion, as will be readily seen.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a gate and a post to which it is hinged, of a hinge composed of a portion attached to said gate, a hinge-pintle on which it swings, and a portion which is formed in two parts pivoted together on said hinge-pintle, which embraces and clamps said post, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a gate, of a hinge consisting of a part attached to said gate, a pintle, and a part to embrace the post, consisting of two portions mounted on the pintle, with holes for said pintle formed on centers which are diiferent centers when theportions are in closed position, whereby they are adapted to grip and hold said pintle, substan tially as set forth.

3.
