Description
UNITED STATES Y Patented February 21, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD A. FLOWERS, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,837, dated February 21, 19Q5. Application tiled December 16, 1903. Serial No. 185,328.
To all 11171/0711. it' may con/cern.'
Be it known thatI. CLIFFORD A. FLOWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Farm- Gate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in farmgates; and the object of my invention is to provide a gate which may be opened without swinging, thereby affording an ordinary passage-way, or which may be opened laterally, thereby affording' a passage way twice as wide as that a'orded by sliding the bars.
Another object is to provide a gate that may be used for assorting stock large or small. By sliding the lower section of bars back it provides apassage-way for small stock, but prevents the passing of large stock. By closing the lower section of bars and sliding back the upper section of bars it provides a passage-way for large stock, but prevents the passing of small stock.
My invention consists of the novel features of construction and combination of parts described hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the gate when' closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the gate with the upper section of bars opened and the lower section of bars closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical detail section on the line 3 3 looking in the direction of arrow. Fig. 4 is a vertical detail section on the line 4 4 looking in the direction of arrow, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5 5.
In the construction of my device I employ one post A, to which the gate-frame B is hung by hinges G, four upright pieces K, one slanting brace L, four pieces J, placed edgewise, four pieces N, four bars C and D, fastened together by four pieces I, through which is a hole F, through which may be passed a pin M, and a post F., to which are attached two cleats H. In assembling these. parts the four upright pieces K and the slanting brace L are attached to the four pieces J which are placed edgewise between the four pieces K and to which are also attached the four pieces N, running parallel with the four pieces J, coinposing the gate-frame B, which is attached to the post A by hinges G.
Within the gate-frame B are placed two scctions of bars C and D, said bars C and D being placed between the upright pieces'K and resting on the piecesJ and being held together by four upright pieces I, which are attached to the bars C and D on both sides of the bars C and D and through which there is a hole F, through which may be inserted a pin M, which holds the two sections of bars C and D together. The ends of the bars C and D [it between two cleats H, which are at# tached to the post E. v V
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l In agate, a post carrying pintles, a post carrying an abutment, the gate proper hinged to said pintles; the lower stationary parallel horizontal bars having the short vertical strip secured to one end of said bars and formed with an opening; the upper sliding or Inovable parallel horizontal bars having a short vertical strip at their ends, one of said strips formed with an opening adapted to register with, the first-mentioned opening, and a pin passed through said holes or openings to secure the portions of the gate, all combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my naine 8O
