Description

PATBNTED SEPT. 10, 1907.

GATE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28,1907.

Wihde a:
UNITED STATES ANDREW J. LAURENT, OF INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1907.
Application filed June 28,1907. Serial No. 381,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. LAURENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in gates, and more particularly to a novel form of swinging closure which is especially designed to be applied to a door or porch for the purpose of preventing small children from getting out of a room or inclosure.
The object of the invention is to design a gate of this character which can be readily placed in position and which is adjustable so as to be applied to various widths of door openings.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l. is a perspective view of the gate embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the gate; and, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the latch.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In general the gate comprises a main section which is hinged to one of the door jambs and swings in the usual manner, and an extension slidably mounted upon the main section and carrying a latch for engaging the opposite door jamb. Specifically describing the main section, it will be observed that the same comprises a plurality of horizontal bars 1 having their ends received within a longitudinal groove 2 in an upright 3 provided with the pintles 4 engaging eyes 6 secured to one of the sides of the opening to which the gate is applied. The opposite extremities of the horizontal bars 1 are received between spaced vertical strips 7 having blocks 8 interposed between the same, the said blocks fitting between the horizontal bars 1 and being of a greater thickness than the same whereby spaces are formed for loosely reeeiving'the horizontal bars 9 of the extension. The outer extremities of the bars 9 are received within a longitudinal groove in an upright member 10 located at the swinging end of the gate and similar in construction to the before mentioned upright at the hinged end of the gate. The inner extremities of the horizontal bars 9 of the extension are received between a pair of vertical strips 11 similar to the before mentioned strips 7 of the main portion of the gate, said strips 11 being secured to spacing blocks 12 fitting between the horizontal bars of both the main portion of the gate and the gate extension. It will thus be apparent that the gate extension can be moved longitudinally, and the length of the gate thereby adjusted as may be required.
In order to lock the extension in an adjusted position, a set screw 13 is provided which is threaded in one of the vertical strips 7 of the main section of the gate and is designed to engage one of the horizontal bars 9 of the gate extension. The latch bar 14 is slidably mounted upon the swinging end of the gate and for this purpose is formed with a longitudinal slot receiving the pins or screws 15 carried by the upright bar 10. The lower extremity of the latch bar is reduced for engagement with an eye 16 carried by the door frame and is spaced from the end of the gate by means of an offset 17. The upper extremity of the latch bar 14 extends above the top of the gate and is extended inwardly at 18 to form a finger piece which can be conveniently grasped for the purpose of releasing the latch.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that the gate can be quickly applied to a door frame by securing the two hinge eyes 6 to one side thereof and the latch eye 16 to the opposite side, the length of the gate being adjusted to correspond to the width of the door and locked in an adjusted position by the set screw 13.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a swinging gate, of the character described, the combination of a main gate section comprising a plurality of horizontal bars having the outer ends thereof connected to an upright while the inner ends are received between vertical strips spaced by blocks fitted between the hori zontal bars, the said blocks being of greater thickness than the bars, and an extension comprising horizontal bars sliding against the horizontal bars of the main section of the gate and received between the vertical strips of the main gate section, the outer extremities of the bars being connected to an upright while the inner extremities are received between a second pair of vertical strips separated by spacing blocks extending between the horizontal bars of both the main gate section and the extension.
2. In a gate of the character described, the combination, of a main section comprising a plurality of horizontal bars having their outer extremities fitted within a groove in an upright while their inner extremities are received between a pair of vertical strips separated by blocks fitting between the horizontal bars and of a greater thick ness than the same, and an extension comprising a plurality of horizontal bars received between the vertical strips of the main gate section, the outer extremities of the said bars being fitted within a longitudinal groove in a second upright, while the inner extremities are received between a second pair of vertical strips separated by spacing blocks fitting between the horizontal bars of both the main gate section and the extension.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
