Description

(No Mbdel.)
G. O. BARRETT. GATE FOR WIRE FENCES.
No. 548,795. Patented Oct.
lllllllillltl PATENT GEORGE o. BARRETT, OF CAVOUR, SOUTH DAKOTA.
\ GATE FOR WIRE FENCES.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,795, dated October 29, 1895. Application filed February 2. 1295. Serial No. 537.112. (No 11.0.1.1.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. BARRETT, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Oavour, in the county of Beadle and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inGates for ire Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, and particularly to that class used for Wire fences.
The object of this invention is to produce and arrange improved mechanism which will effect an engagement between the wires of the fence and a post; furthermore, to provide novel means whereby the said wires may be made tight and slackened at the will of the operator in a convenient manner.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide novel means for disengaging the connection between the wires and the post, so that the wire may be removed to allow free passage between the posts of the fence.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of asection of a fence with my gate applied thereto with the lever lowered. Fig. 2 is a similar view 'With the lever elevated, showing the same gate in place. Fig. 3 is a back view of one of the arms.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the fence-post and 2 the wires, both of which may be of an ordinary construction. The wires are secured to the posts, one of which is a terminal provided with eyebolts 3 to receivethe hooked ends 4 of the hinge arms 6. The arms 6 consist of sigmoidally-curved metallic strips with the hooked ends heretofore referred to. The stretcher consists of a vertical brace 5, to which the wires are secured, and a second piece 5*, similarly arranged and pivoted to the ends of the arms 6, said brace 5 being also pivoted to the arms 6, as shown. Centrally of the vertical braces 5 and 5 a lever? is pivoted, and when said lever is lowered, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the wires are loosened and the pintles or hooks 4 may bereadily raised from engagement with the eyes of the bolt 3, while, as shown in Fig. 2, the hooks are turned under or around the loop forming the eyes, and a disengagement is impossible until the lever is lowered. A
Vice 'will be apparent from the foregoing description, and it will be noted particularly that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing materially from the general idea involved.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
l. A gate for wire fences, consisting of a series of wires secured to a frame carrying a set of arms with hooked extremities, an operating lever pivoted to the frame, and means for retaining said lever in elevation, substantially as described.
2. A gate for wire fences, formed of aseries of wires secured to a frame consisting of arms with the free ends formed into hooks, connecting pieces between the arms and an operating lever attached to the. connecting pieces, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. 3. A gate for wire fences, formed of a series of wires secured to a frame consisting of sigmoidal arms having hooked ends, connecting pieces pivoted to the arms, an operating lever arranged on the connecting pieces be tween said arms and means for holding the lever elevated, substantially as described.
4. A gate for wire fences, formed of a series of wires secured to a frame consisting of In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature curved arms having hooked extensions, conin presence of two witnesses. necting pieces between the arms, wires attached to one of said connecting pieces in v GEORGE O. BARRETT. 5 combination with an operating lever pivoted Witnesses:
to the connecting pieces, substantially as de- H. A. GILBERT,
scribed. FRANK PEYLEN.
