Be it known that I, ALLAN J. MaoDorr GALL, a British subject, residing at Detroit, county of l'Vayne, State ofMiohigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Book-Hangers, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to book'holders, and more especially to that class which are adapted to be used for the purpose of providing a device whereby a book may be sup ported from a nail or hook and to be readily removed therefrom.

The invention has for its object the provision of a holder of this class which is intended to replace or serve as a substitute for wire loops such as are ordinarily used for the purpose of supporting books within easy reach, such as for instance directories or other books of reference.

The invention has, furthermore, for its object the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to receive a member upon which an advertisement may be placed, and which may be cheaply made so that it can be given away to the user as an advertisement.

The invention has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar characters denote similar parts and in which Figure 1 shows a fraction of the upper corner of a book equipped with a holder embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawings, my improved holder comprises in its preferred form a member 10 formed of wire and having a ring shape, said wire being looped at its upper end as at 11 to form an eye whereby the hanger may be supported from a na1l or hook.

The side portions of the device approach each other at the lower end and each has a shank 12 which in its extreme lower end is bent at right angles to form a pair of prongs 13 and 14, respectively, it being understood that, in normal condition, the side wires 10 will. be in alinement with each other as shown in Fig. 3 and that in this case the prongs 13 and 14 project sidewise therefrom in opposite directions so that they may be disposed within perforations P such as are frequently punched in the corners of directories and other books of reference.

The device is inserted into its place, after the book is opened wide, preferably near the center of its thickness, whereupon one prong 14 may be inserted in the perfora tion, and the other arm of the device may then be sprung inwardly into the position shown in dot-and-dash lines 10 until the end of the prong 13 comes into register with the other perforation P on the opposite portion of the book. released upon the wire 10, the prong 13 will enter the perforation P, so that then the book may be closed and the device will remain in place and in the condition shown in Fig. 1.

In order to utilize my improved hanger for advertising purposes, I preferably employ a member 15 of sheet material and curled with its opposite edges around the side wire 10 in the manner shown, it being understood that this plate 15 will not interfere with bending the side wires 10 in the manner above described.

To provide for the necessary resilient action of the prongs, the sheet metal member 15, bridging the looped portion, is not wrapped around the wire adjacent to the end of the dependent shank (see Fig. 1), in order to admit of the ready compression of the prongs as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3;-the sheet metal member, however, serves to assist in the returning of the respective shank portion into proper alinement when released.

Changes may be made in the particular construction of my improved hanger without departing from the spirit of the invention, especially in the shape of the side wires which may be rectangular or square or any other form desired instead of the plain annular shape illustrated herein.
