Be it known that I, HENRY J. Essen, a

citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Garter, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to garters, particularly of that type worn by women for supporting the hose or stockings from the corset.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and durable garter, which will securely and smoothly support the stockings, without tearing them which will readily adjust itself to the movements of the wearer, and which will maintain itself in proper position under varying conditions.

To accomplish the above object, the present invention provides a leg encircling band of peculiar construction which will lie fiat against the leg and yield to all movements thereof without binding or without distorting the band, said band having upwardly extending and freely swinging tabs for detachable engagement with the usual supporting straps depending from the corset.

The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part or" this specification, with the further under standing that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is is composed of a series or inelastic sections 10, which may be of any desired number, two being shown in the present instance. non-metallic, such as ivory, rings are disposed between the adjacent ends of the sections 10, and on the free ends thereof. The sections 10 are adapted to slide or move Flat, preferably vertically upon the rings 11, so that the sec tions may swing in an edgewise direction out of line with one another. I

An elastic section 12 is connected to one of the free or outer end rings 11, and is adjustable as. to length by means of a buckle or slide 13. The elastic section is somewhat Wider than the inelastic sections. A hook 14: iscarried upon the free end of the elastic section 12 for engagement with the opposite free end ring lLwhenthe leg encircling band is applied in'position.

l rtab 15 is hingedly connected to each flat ring 11 and is adapted to swing laterally or slide in an edgewise direction upon the ring. Preferably non-metallic, such as ivory, flat loops 16 are secured to the upper ends oi the tabs 15 and are adapted for detachable engagement with the usual supporting straps depending from the corset.

As shown in Fig. L the supporting straps 17 are provided in the usual manner with tabs 18, carrying buttons or headed studs 19, over which are irictionally engaged the usual loops 2d The fiat loops 1% of the garter are adapted for engagement over the buttons 19 and are held thereon by the loops 20, which are subsequently placed in overlapping position upon the buttons or studs 7.9. In this manner, the tlat loops it of the garter are securely 'held to the supporting straps l7.

What is claimed is 1. A garter comprising a leg encircling band composed of a series of inelastic" sections, rings arrangedbetweenthe adjacent ends of said sections and at the ends of the sections, an elastic section connecting the end rings, and tabs mounted on said rings extending upwardly therefrom and having attaching devices at their upper ends for detachable engagement withfthe usual sup-- porting straps, said inelastic sections mamtaining the tabs at a fixed distance apart under all conditions of service, the tabs and the said inelastic sections having relative sliding movement on the rings.

2. A garter comprising a leg encircling band formed of a series of inelastic sections,

flat non-metallic rings connecting two of said sections and arranged at. the ends thereof, an elastic section connected to one of the end rings and having a hook at its free end engaging with another of the end rings,

tabs mounted on each of the rings and extending upwardly therefrom and having means for detachable engagement with the usual supporting straps, said inelastic sections maintaining the tabs at a fixed distance apart under all conditions of service, the tabs and the said sections having relative sliding movement on the rings. I
