IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS FOR CHILDREN.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,066, dated December 19, 1871.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. SoRIvEN and WILLIAM K. TAYLOR, of Flatbush, in the county of Kings and State of New York, hate invented a new and useful improvement in the mode of constructing swings for young children; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawing, which is lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.

To enable the public to understand the nature of our joint invention, and those skilled in the mechanic arts to construct the same, we will describe it as follows, to wit:

Figure 1 is a perspective drawing of our improved babies swing.

A is the bottom or seat. B B B B B are the rounds or connecting-bars, which are provided with loops or round holes at each end thereof. B B are also provided with diagonal slots or openings 88 at one end thereof, so that the nurse may be enabled to open or close the front bars, as shown at B, in order to place the child upon the seat A or to remove the same. 1 2 3 4 and 1 2 3 4. are the standards or uprights, which are made in hollow sections, so that the ropes 0 will vertically pass through them and through the holes or loops in the end of the different connecting-bars or rounds B B B B and B B which hold the upright sections in their proper positions while the ropes c c are in the position shown at Fig. 1, and when the suspending-ropes c are slacked the front bars B B may be unhooked to remove the infant; but the child is unable to open the bars B and B while its own weight is upon the seat A. N N are two straps, of either leather, webbing, or any suitable material that will prevent the bars B B from riding up upon the suspending-cords c 0 While the swing is in motion. These straps must be made of good material for safety to the occupant of the seat A.

We are aware that swings or scups for young children have long been in common useprovided with straps in front thereof, and others having the front side to slide up and down like a window-sash are also well known to the public, and either of the above devices are liable to be removed by the child itself while suspended in the seat A; which is not the case with our improvement, which may be provided with a springhook or catch to hold the rope c in lieu of the slot 8, if thought best, yet the effect would be the same. Hence, the novelty of our joint invention is the construction of any suitable hooks or loops 8 to receive and hold the suspendingropes c, in combination with the seat A, uprights 1 2 3 4. and 1 2 3 4, and connecting-bars B, all secured and firmly held in position by the weight of the child in the seat A. Therefore,

What we claim as our joint new and useful improvement, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The slotted or hooked bars B B, in combination with the straps N N, vertical sections 1 2 3 4 and 1 2 3 4:, bars B, and suspending-ropes 0, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
