Description

tnted tats-e @anni @wie Letters Patent No.11o,ro9,data Januarys, 1871.` @maciza/J @w 21h/rf@- IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S HQBBY'HORSES- The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I,W1LLIAM L. WILLIAMS, of the city and State of New York, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Hobby or Rocking-Horses; and I dohereby declare Jthe following to bea correct description of the same.
The hobby and rockinghorses heretofore nonstructed are dangerous for small children, because they may fall yofi` either from losing their hold, or from going to sleep while seated 'on the horse.
The object of ,my invention is' to prevent accident, and allow the child to remain upon the horse, even while asleep, so that he may goon rocking when he awakes again.' Y l In the drawing I have shown a side View of a horse tted with my improvement, (see Figurev 1,) and in.
Figure 2 a plan is shown of the shield separate from the horse.
The seat is formed by the portion alof' the horses back, and I have shown the legs of the horse as connected with the rockers b. y
I make use of a shield, o, surrounding the seat, so
that the child sits within this shield, and is supported bythe same oneither side. I i I- have shown the shield 'c as made in two parts,
united vby a joint, d, upon a vertical stud or post, and
at the front ends of the shield c slots or mortises are formed to set over the bolt e, running transversely through the neck of the hobby-hose, and provided with locking-pins standing at right angles to the bolt,
,so as to hold thetwofparts of the shield irmly when closed, or to allow the shield to be opened for setting in the child.
f The, means for fastening ythis shield, so as to be opened orietained permanently', may be varied.
The shield may be padded, it' desired, 'as a support for young children, to prevent them lying in an uncomfortable position in oase of falling asleep.
The shield does not prevent themotion of the body in rocking, and the child can grasp the same wit-h the hands.
I claim as my invention- The bolt e, passing through the vneck of the hobbyhorse and having lockingpins, in combination with the shield c, hinged at d to the stud or post, as and' for the .purposes set forth. y In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 24th day of September, 1869.
