mortar-case.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
I Application filed March 27, 1914. Serial No. 827,692.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAY E. SMITH, citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
. Thls invention relates to toilet cases, and
comprises a box or case ofcompact and. attractive form, and susceptible of ornamentation to a. high degree if desired, said box or case having compartments for face powder and a powder puff or the like, and for'several spools of thread, a needle'case, a pin cushion, a thimble and other articles. An inner flap or cover of the box is also provided with a mirror;
My invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I
' The object of my invention is to provide a very simple and compact toilet case of. the
type referred to, which shall have minimum dimensions and-weight for the desired pur.-.
pose.
drawings, and will then point out the novel features in claims.
Figure 1 shows a top view of one form of my improved toilet case, closed; Fig. 2 shows a top view of such form of toilet case, open; Fig. 3 shows a transverse section of said toilet case, and: Fig. 4 a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 5 shows a top View of an alternative form of toilet'case, open; and Fig. 6 shows a transverse section of such alternative form.
Referring first to Figs. 1-4 inclusive. The case comprisesa top 1 and a bottom 2, hinged together at 3, and forming, when closed, an ovoid body; though this form, while convenient for the purpose, and extremely compact, is not positively essential. The two halves, 1 and 2, of the box, are preferably of similar form and of approximately e ual dimensions. The top'one is provided wit a curvedv partition 4 and a hinged flap 5 which together divide off, in the interior of the box, a compartment 6 adapted to receive face powder and powder puff, or a piece-of cloth having face powder upon it;
and the hinged flap 5 (the axis of the hinge of which is longitudinal in the form shown),
I will now proceed to describe my inven-- tion with reference ,to the accompanying In the said drawings: I
preferably has a mirror surface? which will be exposed when the flap 5 is thrown baeknected at its base to a: pin 9 hinged at 10 m1 the-bottom 2 of the box. This spindle" 8, being hinged to the bottom 2 of the box, may be swung up out of such bottom 2, whenever desired; and yet is held from accidental detachment from the structure, by its screw connection to the pin 9; though such spindle may be unscrewed from the pin whenever desired. .Upon this spindle 8 are mounted, loosely, a number of spools 11 which. may carry thread of different types, or colors, or sizes. ,At its outer end, the spindle 8 is provided-with spring clips 12, adapted to engage and hold detachably a thimble The thimble clips 12 prevent removal of thespools 11 from the outer end of the spindle-8, andthebox-member 2,
itself, normally? prevents such spools from sliding. offthelower end of .said spindle;
thoughwhen it is desired to remove or re- 1 place one of these spools, it is a simple matter to unscrew the spindle 8 from the pin 9, whereuponthe spindle,'with .the spools on it, may belifted out of the ,box, and the spools removed and replaced. The spindle 8 is hollow, as previously stated, and within it'is located a removable, tubular-needle case 14 which, in the'con-.
struction' shown, has a, plurality of needle compartments 15 closed at the end byv a rotatable cap 16 having within it an orifice 17 which may be brought into registry with any one of the needle compartments 15 by rotation of the cap. This needle case is surrounded externally by a pin cushion 18, the pin cushion being of such thickness that it will fit readily within this spindle 8. I have shown this pin cushion as holding a plura 1- ity of pins 19. In the construction shown "Patented Mar. 1917. p
"the spools 11 form convenient receptacles for various toilet articles, such for example, as sclssors, a knife, etc.; none of Whlch ar-- 151C183 are shown, as they form no part of the structure.
In the alternative structureshown in Figs. 5 and 6, the powder compartment, here designated by numeral 6 is located centrally within the top 1, the cover 5 for this compartment beinghinged at one end.' In this form a space is provided between the flap 5 and the bottom of the box for the reception of the thimble, and therefore the toilet case shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is some.- what thicker than that shown in Figs. 1-4 inclusive, but, also, is somewhat more capacious.
What I claim is 1. A toilet casesuch as described, comprising a box having a top and bottom, both of which are recessed internally, one of said recessed members provided with an internal compartment occupying aportion only of the width of that member and with a movable cover for that compartment, and a combined thread and thimble holder secured within the other member of said box and -to one side of said -internal compartment and occupying not only a portion of the recess of the member within which such combined thread and thimble holder is secured,
- said box and to one side of said internal recess of the other member, to one side of the compartment of that other member.
3. A toilet case such as described, com-- prising a top and bottom, both of which are recessed internally, one of said recessed members provided with an internal compartment occupying a portion only of the width of that member, and with a movable cover, for that compartment, and a thimble holder located within the case and to one side of said internal compartment and occupying not only a portion of the recess of the member within which such combined thread and thimble holder is secured, but also a portion of the recess of the other member, to one side-of the compartment of that other member. Y v
4. Atoiletcase such as described, having a top and bottom, the former, adapted to open with respect to the bottom, a thread carrier within said case, and a pin, hinged to one member of said case to which said thread carrier is screw threaded.
5. A toilet case such as described, having a top and bottom, the former adapted to open with respect to the bottom, a thread carrier within said case, and a pin, hinged to one member of said caseto which said thread carrier is screw threaded, said thread carrier having near one end, thimble-holdingmeans whichserves to retain spools in place upon said thread carrier. 7
In testimonywhereof I have signed this specificationv in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, MAY R. SMITH.
