Description

O. D. EWELL.
FOLDING WASHSTAND APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22, was.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
OCH: D. EWELL GUM/1421 4! OGIE 1D. EW'ELL, OF BELLEVUE, TEXAS.
FOLDING WASHSTAND.
Application filed November 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be-it known that I, 001E D. EWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, R. F. D. No. 1, in the county of Montague, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding i Vashstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to furniture and has for its object the provision of a washstand which is foldable so as to occupy but little space when not in use.
An important object is the provision of a. foldable washstand so constructed that when extended for use it will be rigid and strong.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, sanitary, convenient in use and a general improvement of the art.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device extended for use,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view, parts being broken away,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device in its folded position,
Fig. 5 is a front elevation thereof, and
Fig. 6 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a pair of spaced uprights which form the main portion of the supporting frame of my device and which are connected adjacent their upper ends by a transverse rod 11, intermediate their ends by a transverse rod 12 and adjacent the lower ends by a rod 13. The other supporting portion of my device comprises a pair of spaced uprights 14 curved rearwardly at their lower ends as shown at 15, and forwardly curved at their upper ends as shown at 16, the upper ends terminating in reduced extensions 17 which form shoulders 18. lhe uprights 14 are connected adjacent their lower portions by a transverse Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented net. is, ieiv'. Serial no. 62,828.
rod 19 and are connected with 10 by inserting the within holes in the the uprights reduced extensions 17 upper ends of the uprights 10 and then preferably bolting them in place. hen the uprights 10 are thus secured to the uprights 14, the shoulders 18 abutting against the uprights 10 will prevent wabbling of the uprights relatively to each other. In practice, the elements 10 and 14 are constructed of metal, and due to this fact, and the peculiar curvature of the elements 15 and 16 which carry the lower ends of the supports 14 well to the rear of the lower ends of the elements 10, all danger of the forward tipping of the device, when the parts thereof are extended, is avoided.
In order to form a supporting platform or shelf for holding a wash bowl or the like, I provide a pair of brackets 20 having ears 21 straddling ears 22 formed on the forward edges of the uprights 10. Pintles 23 extend through these alined ears for holding the brackets upon the uprights and at the same time allowing rotation thereof. Above the brackets 20, the uprights 10 are provided with ears 24 between which is pivoted a shelf 25 adapted to rest upon and be supported in a horizontal position by the brackets 20.
A soap dish 26 is supported upon the uppermost transverse rod 11 as by forming it of tin or the like and bending its rear portion 27 around the rod.
also provide a folding drawer which comprises a casing 28 having a drawer 29 slidable therein. and provided with the usual knob 30. The casing 28 is connected with the main supporting frame by means of clips 31 screwed upon the upper portion of the rear end of the casing 28 and surrounding the lowermost transverse rod 13. The drawer casing 28 is supported by a pair of brackets 32 having ears 33 straddling ears 34 formed on the forward edges of the lower portions of the uprights 10 and secured by pintles 35.
ien the device is in use, the brackets 20 extend forwardly from the uprights 10 and support the shelf 25 which rests upon them in a horizontal position ready for the holding of a wash bowl or the like. The drawer casing 28 is also extended forwardly from the supporting frame and rests in a horizontal position upon the brackets 32. The drawer 29 may conveniently be used dropped downwardly and will be disposed in a vertical position outwardly of the brackets 20. The drawer casing 28 is then swungupwardly and a screw eye 36 carried thereby is engaged upon a hook 37 carried by the intermediate transverse rod 12. The brackets 32 are then swung inwardly upon each other. When the device is so folded it will appear as in Figs. at, 5 and 6 of the drawing and will occupy but little space when pushed against the wall of a room.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a novel, simple and efiicient washstand which may be folded into a small space when not in use, which may be readily extended ready for use and which will be sanitary and neat in appearance.
It will be readily understood that I reserve the right to make various changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the invention or limiting the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A wash stand comprising in combination, a pair of spaced uprights, transverse rods connecting said uprights and forming therewith a frame, a pair of braces secured to the uprights at their upper ends and curving backwardly and downwardly to form a pair of rear legs, a shelf pivoted across the uprights near their upper ends, a pair of brackets hinged to swing horizontally below the shelf to support the latter, a drawer casing pivoted between the standards and adapted to be swung therebetween with its lower face in a plane common with the fronts of the uprights, a pair of inwardly and horizontally swinging brackets to support the drawer casing, said drawer casing lying to the rear of the shelf when both are in folded position and means for locking the drawer casing in folded position.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
