COMBINED DISPLAY SHELF AND BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed December 5, 1906. Serial No. 346,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. NEWPORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Display Shelf and Rack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined display shelf and rack and has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be readily hung for use, one wherein the shelf and display rods may be conveniently arranged in active position, and one in which the rods may be quickly adjusted in length to accordwith the articles to be displayed thereon.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the parts arranged for use. i
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a vertical back piece or board, preferably of ornamental nature, as shown, and having at its upper edge a central opening 2 designed to receive a screw or other fastening member by which the device is attached to a wall or other support, there being pivoted to the back piece 1 preferably by means of hinges 3 and to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position a leaf or shelf 4 on which vases or other articles to be displayed may stand and which, when not in use, may be turned upward to a vertical position against the back piece 1. j
. The leaf 4, which is of substantially semi-circular form, as shown, is provided by boring or otherwise with a plurality of radial channels or sockets 5, in which are slidably mounted respectively, a plurality of display arms or rods 6 each comprising an inner, tubular portion or section 7 and an outer portion or section 8 telescopically arranged in the section 7 and provided at its outer end with an ornamental knob 9 constituting a finger piece which may be grasped for moving the rod to or from active extended position, it being noted in this connection that the rod sections 7, 8, are of substantially equal lengths and also equal in length that of the individual socket 5, whereby the arms, which may be extended to a maximum length, will, when in non-extended position, be wholly inclosed within the sockets.
In practice, the device may be conveniently hung on a wall or other support by means of a fastening member or screw entered through the opening 2 and the shelf turned downward to a horizontal position for the reception of the various articles to be displayed thereon, while the arms 6 may be individually withdrawn to receive towels, scarfs or other articles for display, it being evident that the arms may be readily adjusted in length to accord with the width of the articles which they are to receive. When the device is not in use the arms may be housed in the sockets 5 and the leaf folded to a vertical, unobstructing position against the back piece 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a display device, a back piece, a leaf pivoted thercto to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position, said leaf having a plurality of radial sockets formed therein and arms slidably arranged in said sockets for projection beyond the edge of the leaf and to be seated wholly within the latter.
2. In a display device, a back piece, a leaf pivoted there to to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position, said leaf having a plurality of radial sockets formed therein, and display arms slidably arranged in said sockets for projection beyond the edge of the leaf and each comprising a pair of telescopically arranged sections, said arms being adapted to be seated wholly within the sockets.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS L. NEWPORT.
