SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Application filed. November 28, 1908. Serial No. 464,099.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA C. CooNs, citizen of the United States, residing at Muir, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelves, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to hanging shelves, and comprises particularly a folding bracket for supporting a set of han ing or swinging shelves wherever desired. The bracket com-- prises a frame formed of bars or parts pivoted together, with a hook at the back whereby it may be hung from a rod or the like, and the arrangement is such that the brackets and shelves when not in use may be foldedup' to occupy but little space. I
The manner of construction of the device -will be more fullyvevident from the following sists of front verticaLbars 6.- and rear. vertical bars Z, with horizontal bars 8, the ends of all' these bars being connected by. pivots 9 whereby theymay be turned with respect to each other to rm either a rectangular frame or to bring the bars in close relation to each other. Connected to the top of the upper rear bar 7 is a bar 10 which isin turn connected to a hook 11 by a pivot 12, which also serves to connect one'end of a jointed brace consisting of two bars 13 pivoted toether at 14, and connected at its front or fewer end to the upper end of the top front bar 6. Thjsproduces a frame all the members of which are connected by pivots so that they can be swung or folded to close relation, but which in consequence of the brace 13 will be 'sup orted in rectangular. position when desired hooks may moved.
The shelves 15 are laid on the cross bars 8 of two or more of the brackets so described. The brackets are conveniently supported by means of a rod 16 resting on two nails 17 which may be driven into a wall 18. Or the hang on nails in joists overhead, or be otherwise supported.
When it is desired to swing or fold the shelves close to the wall, the aces 13 are flexed at the joints 14, allowing the front bars 6 and the cross bars 8 to be swung up and in toward the wall where they may be fastened b any convenient-device, for .instance,"a t umb nut at one of thevpivots, as
shown at 20. The shelves 15 may, if necessar be removed before the bracket-s are fol ed up, but they can be folded to a considerable extent without removing the shelves. And when the devices are taken down for movin or storing the same the parts may be fol ed together to occupy very little space, the shelves of course being re- The invention enables a set of shelves to be guickly put up and taken down, and .will be ound very desirable where shelves have to be moved at any time, aslfrom one house to another. For a shelf which hangs from overhead, the hooks 11, can bepffset over the middle of the .s'helve's, so that they w ill hang level.
I claim: 1
The combination of a pair of brackets each comprising front andrear vertical bars, horizontal cross bars connecting the front and -rear bars, all of said bars being pivoted together, a hook connected to the upper end
