JAMES a coNTEnIo, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CORNER-BRACKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. CoNTnRIo, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ing surfaces to thus avoid the necessity of providing attaching members driven into the supporting surfaces, whereby the bracket may be applied or removed in a most ready manner, and without marring the supporting surfaces.
It is in general the object of the present invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure and to increase the supporting eiliciency and the ease of application of dev ces of this character, and it is more particularly an object to provide a bracket of the present nature, which when not in use may be folded to occupy a minimum amount of space.
A further object resides in the provision of a bracket of the present nature including foldable body bars and a supporting shelf foldable upon folding movement of said :bars, whereby said shelf and bars may be retained in difiere'nt angles in various manipulations of the device.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in thenovel combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view with the supporting surface broken away and showmg the device as when mounted in the corher of abutting walls.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. V Fig. 3 1s a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 16, 1919.
Application filed August 9, 1918. Serial No. 249,184.
through a part -of one of the horizontal frame bars of thebracket.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken vertically through the device and intersecting the angle of its side portions.
Fig. 6 is a view showing a modification of the frictional support engaging means of the bracket.-
. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the body frame of the bracket comprises a pair of bars ,5 and 6, preferably formed of aluminum to provide sufficient strength with a maximum lightness, and each bar has one end laterally directed at 7 for securement thereto of one leaf of a hinge 8, whereby said bars may be folded to lieagainst each other, or may be swung to form any desired angle, the laterally turned ends of the bars being extended inwardly of the angle formed thereby, and the hinge leaves being secured to the outer faces of said laterally turned end portions. For frictionally securing the bracket bars to the wall surfaces at the corner of a room or to anyother desired angular support, rubber suction pads or cups 9 are distributed along the outer faces of the bars 5 and 6, each cup being secured to its bar by a screw 10 threaded through'the bar and threaded into a nut'll embedded in a boss 12 of the rubber' cup. For urging the bars against the supporting surfaces, a spreader is employed. This preferably consists of an extensible and foldable brace rod detachably secured to Y the intermediate portions of the bars 5 and 6 and this rod comprises outer sections 13 having their ends laterally bent to engage in socket plates 14 secured on the inner faces of the bars 5 and 6. Pivotally secured to the ends of the outer sections 13 are threaded sections 15 having their inner ends engaged in a turn buckle sleeve 16, the pivotal connections between the threaded sections 15 and the outer sections beingslidable so that the ends of 'the said sections 15 may seat in socket recesses 17 of the outer sections to prevent relative pivotal movement of the sections when expanding pressure is set up within the spreader by rotating the turn buckle sleeve.-
To assist in supporting the bars 5 and" 6, a pair of supplemental and pendant bars 18 are r'ovided, each having one end eccentrica 1y pivoted to the lower edge tion of a main bar whereby it may old closely thereagainst and having distributed along its outer face rubber cups 19 similar to the cups 9. For urging these bars frictionally against angular supporting faces for the bracket, a spreader is provided similar to that of the main bracket bars, and comprising outer sections 21 having laterally turned ends engageable in socket plates 22 obliquely secured on the inner faces of the bars 19, these outer sectionsbeing pivotally connected with threaded sections 23 engaged in a turn buckle sleeve section 24:.
The entire bracket structure thus described may be folded when not in use to occupy a minimum amount of space and may be readily secured frictionally to a pair of angular supporting faces, the cups forming vacuums in connection with smooth supporting surfaces to firmly hold the bracket bars against displacement.
Particularly for use on rough surfaces, the rubber cups may be eliminated and the modified structure shown in Fig. 6 utilized, wherein the outer faces of the bracket bars have secured thereto rubber friction pads or plates 25 having transverse teeth facing away from the angle of the bracket.
To provide a shelf surface permanently associated with the bracket bars and foldable therewith upon folding of said bars, a series of tapered plates or leaves 26 are provided, having their side edges hingedly connected to form a fan like structure, the outer side edges of the outer leaves being hingedly secured to the upper edge portions of the bracket bars 5 and 6. Thus, when the bars 5 and 6 are disposed in substantially right angular position, the leaves 26 present a flat shelf surface.
It will, however, be appreciated that the bracket bars 5 and 6 may be utilized for supporting a separable shelf, and that various other changes and modifications may be resorted to without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. A bracket comprising a pair of hingedly connected bars, friction members on the outer faces of said bars, a spreader having its ends pivotally connected with the bars, bars depending from the first-named bars, and a second spreader having its ends ]pivotally connected with. the last-named ars.
2. A bracket support comprising a pair of hingedly connected bars, friction members on the outer faces of said bars, an extensible rod having its ends pivotally connected with the bars, bars pivotally connected with the first named bars, friction members on the outer faces of said second named bars and a rod having its end ivotally connected wit-h the second named bars.
3. In a corner bracket, the combination with a pair of bars connected at one end at an angle to each other and having upright sockets on their inner faces and friction pads on their outer faces, and bars respectively depending from the first bars and having oblique sockets on their inner faces: of a spreader having bent ends removably engaging said upright sockets, and a second spreader having bent ends removably engaging the other sockets.
4. In a corner bracket, the combination with a pair of bars connected at oneend at anangle to each other and having upright sockets on their inner faces, and friction pads on their outer faces; of a spreader havingbent ends removably engaging said upright sockets, a pivot within the len th of the spreader, and means for nullifying the pivotal action thereof when the spreader is forcibly distended.
5. In a folding corner bracket, the combi nation with a pair of bars hinged together at one end, friction pads on their outer .together edge to edge and with the outer edges of the outer leaves connected to the first-nal ned bars.
6. In a folding corner bracket, the combination with a pair of bars hinged together at one end, suction cups on their outer faces. a spreader between the bars having a pivot within its length, bars depending from the first bars and a spreader between the depending bars also having a pivot within its length; of a fan-like folding shelf composed of tapering leaves hinged together edge to edge and with the outer edges of the outer leaves hinged to the first-named bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
