Application filed November 22,1904. Serial No. 233,918.
To (LU [07m/lt it Y11m/,U concern:
Be it known that LVILLLUL B. MCB'IAHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding-Canopy Attachments for Chairs, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention has relation to folding-canopy attachments for chairs; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of this invention is to provide a folding-canopy attachment adapted to be used u pon chairs in general and upon folding beachchairs in particular.
ll'ith this and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular construction shown and described.
ln the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention applied to a folding' beach-chair, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the canopy and chair collapsed.
To the upper end of the back of the chair l are attached the strips 2 2. The cross-rod 3 is fixed to said strips 2 2 and has its ends pivotally connected in any suitable manner to the frame 4. Said frame 4 is covered with a suitable fabric The upper ends of the props 6 are pivoted to the frame 4, while the lower ends of said props are connected by a cross-rod 7. The
cleats 8 8 are attached to the rear sides of the strips 2 2.
The chair may be provided with an ordinary folding seat, as shown, or with a fixed seat, as desired.
W' hen in use, the parts are in the position as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. To collapse the canopy-top, the lower ends of the props 6 6 are raised, and the cross-rod 7 is lifted out of the cleats 8 8, when the front end of the frame 1i may be swung down, using its connection with the rod 3 as a pivot, and the parts are folded in a manner as shown in Fig. 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1 A folding-canopy attachment for chairs consisting of strips adapted to be attached to the chair, a frame covered with a fabric and pivotally mounted with relation to said strips, props pivoted at their upper ends to said frame and extending' at their lower ends beyond the strips, a cross-rod located behind the strips and connecting' the lower ends of said props together, and a means for supporting said cross-rod on said strips.
2. A folding-canopy attachment for chairs consisting' of strips adapted to be attached to the chair, a frame covered with a fabric and pivotally mounted with relation to said strips, props pivoted at their upper ends to said frame and extending' at their lower ends beyond said strips, a cross-rod located behind said strips and connecting the lower ends of said props together, cleats attached to the rear edges of said strips and adapted to receive said crossrod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
