T 0- all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Romani' lV. VAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of N ew York, have invented anew and useful Co\'er-I1`astening Means for a Garbage- Receptaele, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means for fastening a cover toA a garbage receptacle; to provide a novel, practical and durable cover, adapted to be readily secured tightlyI over the barrel and adapted to prevent the escape of dust and odors; and to provide in connection with the cover fastening means, novel means for preventing garbage from becoming lodged between the fastening means and the edge of the cover, in order that a secure closure of the barrel may invariably be effected.
This application is a division of my pending application for patent on a barrel, Serial No. 7,911, filed February 12, 1915.
I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1 is a detail view partly in section and partly in elevation of my invention applied to a. garbage barrel; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan of one of the cover holders; Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational view of one of the cover holders; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the invention applied to a cover.
Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitablerbarrel 134` reinforced by suitable vertical braces 135 which are secured to a suitable reinforcing ring 109, the uppermost portion of which is positioned parallel with the upper edge of barrel 134. Secured to member 109 are cover holders 172, having springs 174 adapted to engage against the' top of cover 140. I prefer to provide three cover holders 172, spaced ninety degrees apart, to admit of the convenient insertion and removal of the cover 140. I further provide a suitable removable pin 175 to hold the cover against displacement after it has been inserted under the cover holders. An important feature of my invention is the provision of a novel inner sharpened portion of edge 176 on cover holders 172.
In operation, cover 140 is inserted under springs 174 of cover holders 172, which secure the cover tightly over the barrel. If any garbage is caught between the outer peripheral edge or surface 177 of cover 140 and cover holders 172. it is severed by the sharpened portion 170. Any clogging is thus prevented when the cover is moved into position over the barrel as any obstructing. material is substantially severed by the operation of sharpened portion 176. In taking cover 14() off by hand previous to attachment to the cart, pin 175 is irst removed, which permits cover 140 to be readily withdrawn b v means of projection 160.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, aA garbage receptacle, a reinforcing upper ring affixed to the garbage receptacle and having its upper portion parallel with the upper edge of the receptacle. a cover slidably mountable thereover, cover holders engaging over the cover and having interiorly beveled edges, whereby any garbage caught between thc edge of the cover and the cover holders will be severed.
A garbage receptacle having a plurality of cver holders adapted to engage over the top of a cover and having sharpened interior edge portions positioned to contact against the peripheral edge of the cover to sever obstructing garbage, and a cover slidably mountable over the receptacle and under the aforesaid cover holding members, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the class described, a barrel, an annular reinforcing ring having its upper edge parallel with the upper edge of the barrel, a cover slidably mountable thereover, means secured to the reinforcing ring projecting over the cover member, said means having upright sharpened edge portions adapted to contact against the peripheral edge of the cover when in place, springs on the cover holding means, and removable means for fastening the cover in closed position over the receptacle, substantially as shown.
