Be it known that I, ROBERT W. VAIL, va citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and have invented a new. and

useful Ash and Garbage, Dustless, and

Odorless Barrel, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object the creation of more Sanitary conditions in devices for holding ashes and garbage previous to its collection. It is further my object to provide a novel barrel supplied with a novel, practical and durable cover, arranged to keep dust and odors from' escaping from the barrel and germ-carrying flies; and it is my purpose to provide a barrel arranged for the sanitary dumping thereof into the ash cart ,which I lin my co-p'ending application, Serial No. 7,910. It is further my object to provide a barrel arranged sojthat it can be speedily rolled from the house to the curb, and to provide a cover suppliedwith means for-attaching disinfecting apparatus.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

I rovide a barrel body 134, preferably ofcy indrical form, having a bottom 149 and a cover 140. The barrel -body is reinforced by vertical supports or braces 1,35 having outturned portions 137-, as shown in Fig. 3. Bolted to portions 137 is a reinforcing bottom ring 136 having a beveled portion 153, to facilitate the rolling of the barrel on the ground. The barrel is further provided with an internal brace member 182, which extends down opposite sides and across the bottom, as illustrated in Fig. 3. My barrel is provided with opposite vertical handles 138, mounted on braces 135, and opposite horizontal handles 147 attached to revoluble ring 143, as shown in Fig. 1. Ring 143 is mounted on an inner rigid ring 144 which is attached to the barrel. Ring 144l isprovided with av groove 145 in its outer face to receive the semispherical ends of pins. 146 which are mounted in revoluble ring 143 and retain it in place to allow it to revolve on ring 145. There are from four toeight pins 146.

Referring toFig. 3, I provide a top ring l109 having an annular horizontally projecting portion 148, and an upwardly extending annular portion 139 on the flat upper surface of which (which is parallel with the end of the barrel body upper edge,) rests cover-140. -Cover-holders'172 are provided, as shown, to engageover the top of cov'er 140, having springs 174 engaging aga-inst the cover. A removable pin 175 holds the cover over the barrel normally, by keeping itV from sliding out of engagement with springs 174 of the overlapping clips 172. The cover is further provided with a projection 160, adapted to engage in a corresponding recess in a cover operating member of the cart mechanism with which this barrel is used and which is set forth in detail in my copending application relating to the cart. Attached to member 109, are juitable-arms 180, 'as shown in Fig. 2which support a rod .181, which is adapted to enf' gage in a hook like holding member of the cart mechanism set forth in my copending application and illustrated therein-and also in Figs. 4 and 5 of this application. Opposite to member 181 is a suitable lug 108, as shown lin Figs. 2 and 1, by means of which the barrel is secured to the cart, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. j l
