CAN-CLOSURE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Application filed July 7, 1910. Serial No. 570,711.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and satisfactory attachment for positively holding in position the covers of receptacles, such as garbage cans, while at the same time providing for their ready removal when desired.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a can having my invention applied thereto in preferred form; the cover holder being shown in operative position, and its inoperative position being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view corresponding with Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the cover holder in inoperative position.
The can or other receptacle 2 may be of any preferred form; and the cover 3, which may loosely inclose the rim of the can as shown, is provided with a handle 4 for conveniently placing and removing the same, as usual.
My invention consists in an attachment to the receptacle for securely holding the loosely placed cover 3 against accidental displacement; said attachment comprising a pintle 5 fixed to the receptacle, and a springpressed cover-holder 6 rotatably mounted on said pintle and adapted to normally hang in approximately vertical position at the side of the can or to be swung into operative horizontal position above the cover. The pintle 5 is shown as a part of a bracket 5 which is rigidly riveted to the body of the can so as to stand vertically a suitable distance away from the rim of the latter; and the coverholder 6 is pivotally mounted upon said pintle by means of an eye-end 6 so as to be capable of swinging thereon in a horizontal plane. This eye-end 6 of the cover-holder, as shown, forms part of a spring-hinge member to which the main portion 6 of the holder, forming the other hinge member, is connected by pivotally engaged ears 6 6 and 6 6 with a spring 7 attached to the parts as in ordinary spring-hinge constructions; the effect being to normally depress the main portion 6 of the cover holder while permitting the same to be forcibly raised above the horizontal position indicated in Fig. 1; and the combined parts 6, 6 of the holder being at the same time jointly movable upon the pintle 5.
It will be readily understood that when the cover-holder 6 is in the position indicated in Fig. 1 it will press upon the cover with a force determined by the spring tension provided, which tension of course should be suflicient in amount to securely retain the cover against accidental removal. When it is desired to remove the cover however the holder may be readily raised against the spring tension, and swung horizontally upon the pintle 5 until clear of the can, when its release will return it to the normal inoperative position indicated in Fig. 3 where it is safely out of the way in handling the receptacle.
The preferred construction specifically shown and described may obviously be modified Without departing from the invention as clearly defined in the claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a receptacle and a separately removable cover therefor, of a cover-holder comprising a pivoting member connected to said receptacle so as to swing only in a horizontal plane, and a normally depending spring member adapted to be sprung into horizontal position the cover.
2. The combination with a receptacle and a separately removable cover therefor, of a bracket fixed to said receptacle and provided with a vertically arranged pintle, and
to engage a spring-hinge cover-holder comprising a In testimony whereof, I afiix my signamember rotatable on said pintle in a fixed ture, in the presence of two Witnesses. horizontal plane, and a hinged member carried by said rotatable member and spring- ALEX.
