Description

PATENTED NOV. 24, 1903.
R. H. FESPERM'AN. HINGE FOR BARREL COVERS. APPLICATION FILED AUG. s, 1903.
UNITED STATES Iatented November 1965:
PATENT OFFICE.
HINGE FOR BARREL-COVERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 744,737, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed Angnst 3,1903. Serial No. 168,108. No model.)
To all whon't it may concern..-
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. FESPER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the Creek-Nation, Indian Territory, have invented a new and useful Hinge for Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to means for detachably and movably connecting covers to barrels, boxes, and like receptacles, and has for its object to simplify and improve devices of this character and produce a device simple in construction, quickly and easily applied, and which will be concealed when the cover is closed; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
thereof and below the upper edge.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a sectional view 'ot' a portion of a receptacle and its cover with the improved device applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improved device detached.
The device may be applied to barrels, boxes of various kinds and similar receptacles, but
for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a barrel and its removable cover, to which it is more particularly adapted; but it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited in the use of the device to any specific form of receptacle or to receptacles employed for any specific purpose, but reserve the right to its use for any purpose or upon any structure to which it is adapted.
The improved device is intended more particularly for use in stores and warehouses upon barrels, boxes, and similar receptacles to which access is frequently required and the contents of which it is necessary to protect, and it consists in a U-shaped clip member 10, having a set-screw 11 engaging one leg and with spaced perforated cars 12 13 extending from the other leg, as shown. The clip member is adapted to fit over the chime of a barrel 14 or over the edge of a box or like receptacle, with the earson the interior Hinged at one end by a pintle 15 between the ears 1213 is an arm 16, the free end of the arm carrying a plate 20, hinged thereto by a pinthe set-screw 11, and will not be exposed,
therefore, above the cover member who liable to be broken by objects placed thereon. The concealing of the attachment is also of material advantage in not detracting from the appearance of the receptacle or marring the outer face of the cover member when applied to highly-finished or oruamentalreceptacles. The cover member is thus supported in position to be opened back as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and be supported in its open position by the attachment, as will be obvious.
The parts will be of metal of sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which it will be subjected and may be of any size to adapt them to the size or capacity of the reconnected by its free end to the under side thereof, at a point remote from its edge.
2. A support for the covers of barrels and the like consisting of an inverted-U-shaped clip having spaced ears on the outer face of one leg and a set-screw operating through the other leg for detachable connection to the rim of a barrel, an arm hinged at one end between said spaced ears and adapted. for connection by its free end to the under side of the cover member of said barrel, substantially as described.
3. A cover-support comprising an inverted U-shaped clip adapted to fit over and be detachably connected with the upper edge of a receptacle, one leg of said clip having spaced ears projecting from the outer face thereof at an intermediate point, and an arm pivotally mounted between said ears and having a plate movably connected with its free end, said plate having means for attaching it to the cover.
4. The combination with a receptacle having a cover therefor, of an inverted-U -shaped clip fitting over the edge of said receptacle with the outer leg thereof provided with a set-screw for engaging the receptacle, the inner leg having spaced ears projecting from RICHARD H. FESPERMAN.
