Be it known that l, FRANK T. MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avis, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Holders, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved plate holder and has for its primary object to provide holding or supporting device for plates which may be readily adjusted in accordance with the length of the shelf upon which the holder is to be arranged.

t is an additional object of the invention to provide improved means for mounting the plate holder readily moved or adjusted in order to clean the shelf or renew the covering thereon.

It is a further general object of the invention to provide an adjustable plate holder which may be manufactured at small cost, can be readily applied in position for use by the individual purchaser, and will provide a very convenient and serviceable hold r or support for the dishes when the latter are set on edge and will obviate break age of the same.

,With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 and 6 designate the two sections of the plate holder, each of which is constructed from a single length of sheet metal. The section 5 of the holder is bent over upon itself along one of its longitudinal edges, as indicated at 7, and spaced from the medial portion of the holder plate. By grasping the outer ends of the holder sections, they may be readily shifted to increase or decrease the length of the holder, as may be required In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have shown the device as applied to a cupboard. Screws 11 are disposed through the openings in the ends of the arms 9 and 10 of the holder and threaded into the opposite side walls W of the cupboard immediately above the shelf. The flanges 7 are disposed next adjacent to the shelf board, and in the normal position of the device the arms 9 and 10 are slightly inclined downwardly and the holder rests upon the shelf board at the junction of the flanges 7 with the medial body portions of The plates are disposed in a substantially upright position with their edges bearing upon the flanges 7. The arms 9 and 10 effectually prevent any rolling longitudinal movement of the plates or crowding of the same upon each other which might result in breakage of the same. A washer plate is preferably disposed between the cupboard wall and each of the arms 9 and lO'so as to permit of a free turning or pivotal movement of the arms upon the fastening screws. Thus, when it is desired to clean the shelf board or provide the same with a new covering, the plates are first removed and the holder then swung upwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This movable mounting of the holder without detaching the same is of great convenience in practical use.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have shown the device as applied to the top shelf of a sideboard, which is not constructed with the vertical side walls W, as is the cupboard. In such use, the fastening screws are threaded into the opposite end edges of the back of the sideboard, which admits of the necessary leverage in order to raise the plate holder from contact upon the shelf. In either case, the plate or dish holder may be very easily and quickly applied, the ordinary screw driver being the only required tool.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of application and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. It is obvious that the sections of the plate holder can be made in any desired length and the metal holder sections can also be nickeled, or otherwise ornamented. As each of the sections of the holder is constructed from a single piece of sheet metal, it is apparent that the device can be manufactured at relatively small cost and will be highly durable and eflicient in practical use. Therefore, while I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is to be understood that I reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7

Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is z- An adjustable plate holder including two relatively adjustable sections each consisting of a single metal plate bent upon itself along one of its longitudinal edges and having its other longitudinal edge angularly bent to provide a flange, each of said plates being provided upon one end with an angularly disposed arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the side walls of the cupboard above a shelf, the holder sections normally resting upon the shelf and said flanges extending toward the back wall of the cupboard, the plates, when arranged on edge against the back wall of the cupboard, be-
