Description
J. MALASPINA. ADJUSTABLE WASHTRAY GOVER HOLDER AND FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MARJA, 1914. I l ,1 2%,Q4 Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
THE NORRIS PETERS CO PHam-LITHOU \VASHINGTON. D. r
JOHN MALASPINA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE WASI-ITRAY-COVER I-IOLDER AND FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed March 14, 1914. Serial No. 824,726.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN TVIALASPINA, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 38 New Bowery, in the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable VVashtray-Cover Holder and Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastening device especially adapted for hingedly securing a wash tub cover to the back wall of the wash tub, although it is not necessarily limited to this use.
According to the present method of securing covers to wash tubs, a strip of wood is rigidly secured to the wall of the room and extends along the top of the wash tub at the rear, so that the hinges on the covers can have points of attachment. The use of these strips of wood is objectionable for several reasons, namely, that it takes considerable time and skill to fasten them in place, and the wall to which the strip is fastened is necessarily injured, especially where the wall consists of lath and plaster, and if the wall is tile it is necessary to drill holes to receive expansion bolts or equivalent means for fastening the strip of wood in place.
The general objects of the present invention are to overcome the difliculties above mentioned by providing a cover-securing device which is of universal application, in that it can be readily adjusted to wash tubs in which the back wall varies in thickness, and which also is of neat and attractive appearance and so designed that it can be readily applied without any special skill on the part of the workmen.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, novel and effective coverfastening device which comprises an inverted U-shaped clip composed of adjustably connected sections, one section having means to which the hinge of the cover can be anchored, and one of the sections is provided with a clamping device which is adapted to engage one side of the rear wall while the other section engages the opposite side of such rear wall so as to firmly secure the device in place.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel Referrin to the drawin 6 and 7 in Fi 1 designate respectively the cover and back wall of an ordinary stationary wash tub or equivalent structure, which cover is fastened to the rear wall 7 by the fastening device which constitutes the subject matter of the present invention. This fastening device comprises a clip or body formed of sections 1 and 2, which, together, constitute a U- shaped structure which is adapted to straddle the rear wall 7 of the wash tub. These sections 1 and 2 are oppositely disposed L- shaped parts which have spaced parallel members that are disposed at opposite sides respectively of the wall 7 and they also constitute horizontal members 1 and 2 which are in contact, as shown in Fig. 1. The member 1 has an elongated slot l through which extends a screw 4 that is threaded in the member 2 the head of the screw being countersunk in the slot 1". By means of this arrangement the two sections 1 and 2 can be adjusted toward or from each other so as to be placed on wash tub walls of different thicknesses. To secure the clip or body of the fastener firmly in place a thumb screw 3 is carried by the rear section 2 so as to bind against the rear surface of the wall 7, while the front section 1 engages the front surface of the said wall.
A hinge 8 is employed to secure the cover 6 to the clip or body of the fastener, the leaf 8 of the hinge 8 being suitably secured to the cover, and the leaf 8 being secured to the rear portion 1 of the horizontal member 1 of the front section 1 of the device. This portion 1 has openings 1 for receiving bolts 5 which pass through the leaf 8 of the hinge. The portion 1 can be of any desired shape, but in the present instance it is shown of angular form with a vertical portion With which the rear edge of the cover engages and with a horizontal portion to which the hinge leaf 8 is fastened.
Obviously, a plurality of these fastening devices will be employed for each cover of the Wash tub, and in securing the cover in place the clips or bodies of the fastener are first applied to the back wall 7 of the tub, and then the cover 6 with the hinges first attached thereto, is placed in position on the Wash tub and the hinges bolted to the extensions of the clips.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cover fastener comprising a clip formed of a front angular section having horizontal and vertical members, a rear anpair of angular sections having horizontal 4 members in contact and having vertical members spaced apart to straddle a part to which the device is fastened, one of the sections having a slot in its horizontal member, and the other having a fastener extending through the slot to provide for adjusting the sections with respect to each other, one of the sections having the rear portion of its horizontal member projecting beyond and overhanging the other section, and a the said rear portion.
