BARREL-COVER HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,024, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed August 9, 1900. Serial No. 26,422. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD R. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Cover Hanger, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in barrel-cover hangers.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of the means employed for supporting the cover of a barrel upon the latter when the former is removed to expose the contents of the barrel temporarily and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be readily applied to the cover of a barrel and capable of firmly engaging the upper edge of a barrel and of securely supporting the cover thereon and of preventing the same from being shaken off the barrel should the latter be tilted or moved while removing a portion of its contents.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure'l is a perspective view of a barrel having its cover supported upon one side of it and provided with a de vice constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the cover. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the hanger. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View illustrating the manner in which the cover is wedged or clamped on the upper edge of a barrel. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the hanger detached.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a barrel-hanger consisting of a concavo-convex disk or body providedat the center of its convex face with a knob or projection of circular form and having a screw 3 extending from the said knob or projection 2 and adapted to be embedded in a barrel-cover i, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 45

of the accompanying drawings. The hanger is mounted on the lower face of the cover 4 and is arranged eccentrically thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, to make one side or portion of the cover heavier than the other when the hanger is engaged with the upper edge of a barrel 5, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, and by making the lower side of the cover heavier than the upper there is no liability of the cover tipping forward should the barrel be moved or shaken. The knob or projection 2, which extends from the center of the convex face of the disk or body, abuts against the lower face of the cover when the device is in position, and the convex face extends from the inner face of the cover at an acute angle and forms a tapering space between it and the cover, whereby the device is adapted to clamp the upper edge of a bar'- rel. When the device is engaged with the upper edge of a barrel, the latter becomes wedged in the tapering space, and this construction is especially advantageous, as by a slight pressure the cover may be firmly placed on the upper edge of the barrel, so that it will not be shaken therefrom should it be necessary to tilt or cant the barrel to remove its contents. Furthermore, this specific construction adapts the device to barrels having staves of varying thickness, and the cover may be readily transferred from one barrel to another if it be ofsufficient diameter to cover the barrel.

The screw may be formed integral with the projecting knob of the disk or body, or it may be constructed in any other suitable manner.

It will be seen that the device, which is ex-' ceedingly simple and inexpensive in construc= tion, forms a combined clamp andhanger,that it is adapted to be readily applied to the cover of a barrel, and that while it is adapted to be applied to barrels having staves of diiferent thickness it is capable of firmly wedging the cover on the upper edge of a barrel, so that it will not be shaken therefrom should it become necessary to tilt or cant the barrel to remove its contents.

What is claimed is-- In a device of the class described, the combination with a barrel-cover, of a combined hanger and clamp consisting of a concavoconvex disk arranged eccentrically on the inner or lower face of the barrel-cover and presenting a convex inner face to the same, arranged at an angle thereto and forming a tapering barrel-receiving space between it 5 and the cover, Wherebya barrel may be posi tively clamped between the disk and the cover to prevent the latter from being displaced from the barrel should the latter be tilted, and a fastening device extending cen- 10 trally from the said disk at the convex face thereof, and embedded in the cover, substan tially as described.
