Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed August 2, 1905. Serial No. 272,434.
To (all whom, it may concern:
invented new and useful Improvements in Spoons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spoons, and particularly to an attachment for preventing the spoon slipping into the contents of a plate or other vessel, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which will present an attractive ornamental appearance and one which will in practice positively engage the rim of the vessel for the purpose in view.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the spoon equipped with an attachment embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of a portion of the spoon and the attachment.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the spoon as a whole, which comprises a bowl 2 and a handle 3, these parts being of the usual or any appropriate construction and material and adapted in practice to perform their ordinary functions.
In accordance with my invention I equip the handle 3 with an engaging member or head 4, disposed at a point suitably remote from the bowl 2 and preferably in the form of a collar cast upon or otherwise suitably applied to and secured fixedly in place 011 the handle 3 and continued wholly around the latter.
In practice when the spoon is in use the member or head 4 will engage the rim of a plate or other vessel, thus positively preventing the spoon from slipping into the contents of the latter, it being noted that the collar is 1 so positioned on the handle as to present an Be it known that I, WVILLrs IV. GRoooTT, a 3
adequate portion of the latter free to be grasped by the hand of the operator and that the portion of the handle which is dosigned to be grasped will be effectively prevented from entering or coming in contact with the contents of the vessel. Furthermore, it will be noted that, owing to the collar being extended wholly around the handle, the collar will properly engage the rim of the vessel for preventing the spoon from slipping thereinto, and this irrespective of the posi tion which the spoon may occupy when placed in the vessel. In other words, when the spoon is released by the operator the collar will properly engage the rim of the vessel, and the spoon will, if turned bottom up at the time of its releasal, automatically right itself.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device which in practice will admirably perform its functions to the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a spoon comprising a bowl and a handle, said handle being provided with an engaging head in the form of an ornamental collar fixed upon the handle at a point suitably remote from the bowl, said head being extended wholly around the handle and adapted for engagement with the rim of a vessel irrespective of the position which the spoon may occupy when placed in the latter.
In testimony whereof I a'Hix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS WV. GROCOTT.
