GLOVE AND MITTEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHA-N MOLLEn, citizen of Sweden, residmg at Kewanee, n
the county of Henry andfitate of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulInrprovements in Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improvement or in carload lots and owing to the lowprices obtainable, it is highly expedient and desirable to be able to manufacture the same at the minimum cost both of labor and as to the amount of material employed. In the present state of the art with relation to these inexpensive cloth gloves, it has usually been found necessary to out the cloth, either canton flannel or duck, from patterns of a size larger than is necessary for a close or snug fit for the hand. This is necessary in view of the fact that the inexpensive cotton gloves or mittens are not cut to size as is the practice with thehigher grade kid gloves or silk fabric gloves. The average hand of a workman is usually taken as the basis for the glove size and if it is too small or too large it is of no particular importance as the gloves are not supposed to be ornamental but rather protecting devices for the hands of the workman. In View of these facts,
therefore, little attention has been given to approximate hand fitting. The aim of the present invention is that of providing a cotton glove of this inexpensive character wherein a minimum size can be made as standard and a certain degree of elasticity permitted by cutting the material on the bias and thereby securing an approximate fit for a hand considerably larger than that of a minimum size. It has been found also that by cutting goods on the bias and building the gloves with material arranged on the bias, 2. material saving in the amount of goods is secured which reduces in the aggregatea-material part of the expense inthe making of these inexpensive goods.
Tlie'object of the invention maybe briefly stated to be that of producing an inexpensive cotton glove which will have the maximum degree of elasticity or stretch laterally and thereby constitute a close fit for the average wearer. V p
In the drawings, there is shown in Figure 1 an elevation of a glove embodying the invention; and in Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing it as a one ply construction.
While the term cotton is employed as designating now the well known type of inexpensive glove it is, of course, to be understood that the invention is not strictly limited to this particular material which possesses great advantages in connection therewith.
The glove selected for illustrating purposes in connection with these specifications is one composed of palm A having the thumb and finger portions as shown and the pieces B and C constituting the backs of the second and third finger parts on the single piece palm part A. With a slight variation as to patterns, the type of glove illustrated is somewhat similar to that shown in the patent to Busby No. 729,731. In this connection, however, all the parts of the glove are made of woven material cut on the bias as shown so that when the glove is assembled the warp threads will be arranged diagonally of the article throughout the'area of all the parts thereof as shown. Here it is to be observed that the diagonal arrangement of the threads of the glove will in the palm and finger portions afford a maximum degree of elasticity in a lateral direction while the same result is accomplished in the thumb portion owing to the angular disposition of the material of the thumb piece with reference to the corresponding threads of said palm and finger portions. The glove may be conveniently provided with a wrist band when desired. It is highly desirable in the inexpensive type of glove to have the same ventilated or of a single ply of material so that air will pass through the.
meshes of the fabric as distinguished from V that type of glove wherein a bias fabric is used having one of its surfaces coated with rubber.
By the bias cut and formed inexpensive glove made in accordance with the above description, it has been ascertained that a very material saving in amount of material is acquired in that the material can be cut narrower and still when formed into the glove will have suflicient stretch to enable it to fit the average hand, as distinguished from the practice heretofore of cutting the material straight and relatively wide so that when the glove is formed, it will have a substantially loose fit for the average hand.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is A glove formed of a single ply of woven cotton or the like and having its various 20 JOHAN PETER MOLLER.
