To all whom it may concern:'

Be it known that I, JEAN DESIRE OUELLETTE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves or Mittens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

The present invention relates to gloves or mittens, and more particularly to gloves or mittensmade of leather or other substantially I5 non-elastic material:

The objects of the present invention are to produce a-glove having the body portion made of leather or other substantially non-elastic material and an elastic wrist portion, the wrist portion being made of material of great wearing qualities and elasticity and one which will afford ample protection to the wrist of the wearer. A further object is to so unite the non-elas- 2 5 tic portion and the elastic wristportion as to not interfere with the expansion of the wrist portion; and a further object is to so construct the glove that the elastic Wrist portion may be provided with a lining to aflord warmth to the wrist.

To the above ends the present invention consists of the improved glove or mitten which will now be described and claimed.

The present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a planview of a mitten embodying the same. Fig. 2 showsa transverse sectional view through the elastic wrist portion, taken on the dotted line w 90, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows in an enlarged view a portion of the mitten at the union between the non-elastic portion and the wrist portion in normal condition, showingthe elasticity of the seam which unites these portions. Fig. 4 shows a similar view with the parts distended.

Similar letters of reference will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the specification and the drawings.

In the drawings, (4 represents the non-elastic portion of my glove or mitten, that shown in the illustrated embodiment being of the well-known form of mitten and made of any desired substantially non-elastic niateriahsuch as kid, buckskin, or other form of tanned skin. brepresents the elastic wrist portion of my glove or mitten. The elastic wrist portion is made of a woven textile fabric embodying strands of rubber 0, usually known in the trade as elastic goring. The particular form of elastic goring shown, however, is made particularly for use in the manufacture of gloves or mittens of the present invention and consists of a woven fabric (Z, having incorporated therein the strands of indiarubber 0, such strands being distended or drawn out While being incorporated in the woven fabric d, so that when removed from the loom and allowed to contract the fabric (Z will be formed between the strands c in a series of puckers or flutes, as shown clearly in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings.

The elastic fabric forming the wrist portion ofmy glove or mitten is made of a width corresponding to the length desired for the wristlet and provided with a selvage edge 0 upon one side and a selvage edge 0' upon the opposite side, which is united to the lower edge of the leather portion of my improved glove or mitten.

In forming my wristlet a piece of the elas- 8o tic fabric of the desired length is removed from a strip of such fabric and the edges united to form the closed. or tubular wrist portion. The wrist portion 6 and the leather portion a are then secured together, the sel- 8 5 vage edge of the wrist portion being butted against the edge of the leather portion and united by a line of looped-over seam-stitches f while the parts are distended, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the result being that 0 I produce an elastic seam for forming the union between the leather portion a and the elastic. wristlet b, which seam is capable of expanding with the wristlet, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. I consider this means of uniting the elastic and non-elastic portions of my glove or mitten to be an important feature of my invention, as in so far as I am advised of the state of the art the seams usually employed to unite portions of garments, including gloves, are non-elastic and will break when subjected to strain in the line of the seam. Again, by forming a buttjoint between the elastic wrist portion of my glove or mitten I do away with the objectionable rib or ridge usually to be found forming the scam in gloves and other apparel.

It is desirable to provide the entire glove with a lining, including the wrist portion, and in order to provide for the proper elasticity or stretching of the wrist portion the lining g is cut full and large at the wrist portion, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and is formed continuous, extending from the non-elastic portion (0 across the seam j and attached to the lower portion Z), adjacent to its sclvage edge 0.

By making my elastic wrist portion of a woven instead of a knit fabric I secure greater strength, and by incorporating therein strands of india-rubber which are protected by being enveloped by the threads forming the textile fabric I secure great elasticity and produce a glove or mitten having a wrist portion which iits and hugs the wrist closely, thus effectually maintaining the glove on the hand, and by employlng an elastic seam for forming the union l between the wrist portion and leather portion of my glove 1 secure the proper expansion of my elastic wrist portion without the liability a of rupturing the seam forming the union.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a glove or mitten, the combination comprising a hand and finger portion of nonelastic material, a wrist portion of woven material, rendered elastic by the embodiment of elastic strands disposed in said woven material in spaces of predetermined areas and one of said elastic spaces being arranged adjacent said hand portion, selvage edges on said elastic space one of which engages said hand portion and is secured thereto, and a lining extending from the non-elastic portion, across the point of union and secured to the lower part of the elastic portion, and being full in said wrist portion to providefor the expansion thereof.
