canon.
Application filed July 3, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KINGSTON FORBES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catches, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in catches and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with automobiles; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this type having novel and improved means whereby a hood may be effectively maintained in closed position and whereby the possibility f rattling is substantially entirely eliminated. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved catch of this general character which is substantially entirely concealed when the hood is in closed adjustment and which is provided with an extended portion affording a handle where by the hood may be readily and conveniently raised or lowered.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved catch whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
llhe novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a catch constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating my invention as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a sill provided with the upstanding flange 1 and with which is adapted to coact in a conventional manner the hood H or more particularly a hinged leaf thereof.
Secured to the inner face of the hood H adjacent its lower or free marginal portion epecification of Letters fiat ent.
Serial 1%. M7395.
is a bracket B substantially U-shaped in form with the arms 2 thereof vertically related when the hood is in closed adjustment. The arms 2 are provided with alined openings 3 through which is loosely disposed the sliding bolt 4 having its inner or upper end provided with the head 5. interposed between the head 5 and the adjacent arm 2 of the bracket B is an expansible member 6 herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring encircled about the bolt 4:.
The outer or lower end of the bolt 4 is provided with the cross head 7 arranged in a direction substantially perpendicular to the flange 1, and the inner arm 8 of said head 7 has its free end portion beveled, as at 9, and provided in its upper or inner margin immediately adjacent the beveled portion 9 with the recess or notch 10 adapted to straddle the upper marginal portion of the ver' tically disposed slot 1.1 produced in the flange 1 and through which the arm 8 is adapted to be directed when the hood H is adjusted into closed position.
The opposite arm 12 of the cross head 7 extends a predetermined distance beyond the hood H to afford a handle 14 whereby the hood may be conveniently raised or lowered and whereby the bolt 4 may be moved downwardly in order to bring the arm 8 in requisite alinement with the slot 11.
It will be perceived that as the bolt 4 is moved downwardly, the expansible member 6 will be compressed so that when the arm 8 is disposed through the slot 11 and the arm or handle 14 released, the resultant action of the expansible member 6 will serve to pull the hood H downwardly and maintain the same in an effective closed adjustment and substantially entirely eliminating any possibility of rattling.
The bracket B may be anchored to the hood H in any desired manner, but 1 prefer to employ the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings and wherein the coacting screws 15 and nut 16 are employed, the same being directed through the end extensions 17 at the base of the bracker B and also through the hood H or more particularly the lower hinged leaf thereof.
The extended portion of the arm 12 may be formed as desired, but it is preferred that such portion be disposed on an inward curvature relative to the hood H to aflord a hook-like member 18 to facilitate its use as a lifting we for the hood.

llltl) From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a catch constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled,
and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with a fixed part and a part movable relative thereto, said fixed part having an opening, a bracket secured to the inner face of the movable part, an endwise movable bolt disposed through the bracket, a cross head securedto the movable member, one arm of said cross head being adapted for insertion through the opening of the fixed part, the opposite arm of the cross head extending beyond the outer face of the movable part, and means for automatically imparting movement to the movable member in one direction.
2. The combination with a fixed part and a part movable relative thereto, said fixed part having an opening, a bracket secured to the inner face of the movable part, an endwise movable bolt disposed through the bracket, a cross head secured to the movable member, one arm of said cross head being adapted for insertion through the opening of the fixed part, the opposite arm of the cross head extending beyond the outer face of the movable part, the opposite end of the movable member being provided with a head, and an expansible member interposed between the bracket and the head for automatically imparting movement to the movable member in one direction.
In testimony whereof hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
