To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH Soss,a cltizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Antirattling Doorknobs, of which the following is a spec-'- tion, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in an anti-rattling atvtachment for door knobs of the class specified which is simple in construction and eflicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate partsv of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fi 1 is a face view of a part of a motor car 001'. showing a handle mounted in connection therewith;

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawin I have indicated at 10 a part of a door 0 a motor vehicle provided with a central body portion '11 of wood, the outer face of which is provided with a sheet metal facing 12 and a suitable lock construction 13 is partially illustrated in Fig. 2, said lock construction being countersunk in the body portion 11 of the door and being actuated b a suitable knob 14: which extends outwar y through the facing sheet 12 in the usual manner.
The knob 14, or the shank thereof, is rovided with two annular recesses 15 an 16 forming an outer shoulder portion 17 on said shank, and-an inner enlarged shank portion 18 provided with a reduced inwardly directed rectangular shank or spindle 19. The knob 14 is mounted in connection with the door 10 and secured against inward and outward movement therein by an escutcheon plate 20 secured to the door by screws 21, said plate being provided with an inwardly directed annular portion 22 which operates in the recess 17 of the shank, and a split ring or washer 23 is assed on over the shank of the knob after sald shank has been passed through the plate 20, and said ring or washer enters the recess 16 and this construction holds the knob in proper position. It has been found by experience that the connection of knobs with the doors of motor vehicles, as herein shown and described, and in many other ways, cannot be so made and fitted as to prevent the rattling of such knobs in the vibratory action of the motor, or in the operation thereof. In order to obviate this objectionable feature, I employ a resilient or tensional element for placing the knob constantly under tension to prevent the rattling of the same and, in the form of construction shown in Fig. 2, I employ a spiral spring 24 which is mounted upon the rectangular shank 19 of the knob, and one end thereof bears upon a shoulder 25 formed by the enlarged portion 18, while the other end of said spring bears upon a seat 26 formed at one end of a tubing 27 through which the shank of the knob 14 passes, and in which said shank is rotatable. The outer end portion of the tubing 27 is provided with laterally directed ears 28, as clearl shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and sai ears are provided with apertures 29 through which the screws 21 are adapted to pass, and said screws also serve to support the tubing 27 in proper position within the door. The outer face of the tubing 27 is also preferably recessed as shown at 30 to receive a split ring or washer 23 so as to permit of the movement of said washer within the tubing 27 in the rotation of the knob.
By employing the spring 24 and mounting it in the manner above set out, the knob 14 is constantly forced outwardly by the tension of said spring, it being understood that when the various parts of the knob are assembled said spring. is placed under compression, and it will be apparent that any vibratory action of the door, or of the body of the motor vehicle, will not cause the ban: dle nor the knob 14 to rattle within its mounting. It will also be apparent that the spring 24 will not in any way affect the operation or rotation of the knob in withdrawing the latch bolt 31 of the lock construction partially indicated at 13 in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The inner end of the rectangular shank 19 of the knob 14 extends into a sleeve 32 rotatably mounted in the lock construction and with which a pawl, finger or the like 33 for actuating the latch bolt 31 is connected and, in practice, I preferably provide said end portion of the shank with a plurality of saw-cuts 34 which extend longitudinally of a predetermined portion of the shank and four of which are employed in the construction shown. Said end portion of the shank is also provided with a threaded aperlure 85, the outer face of which is beveled as shown at 36 and a screw 37 is adapted to pass into the threaded aperture 35 and is provided with a beveled head 38 which cooperates with the beveled face 36 to expand the slotted end portion of said rectangular shank.
By constructing the inner end portion of the shank 19 in the manner above set out, said end portion may placed within the rectangular aperture 39 of the sleeve 32 for rigidly mounting said shank therein, and this construction also,
. in combination with the action of the spring 24, will prevent the rattling of the knob 14.
In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification in which the tubing 27 is omitted and the plate 20 is provided with integral backwardly directed arms 40 joined in a disk-shaped cross head 41 having a central. aperture 42 through which the shank 19 of the knob passes, and in which the same is adapted to rotate. In this form of construction the spring 24 bears upon the face of the disk-shaped cross head '11, and the operation or result produced will be the same as that of the construction shown in Fig. 2, the only difference between thesame being that the spring seat in the construction shown in Fig. 6 is integrally formed with the plate 20, while in Fig. 2 the spring seat is formed in a separate part, namely, the tubing 27. The arms 40 are also joined by a sleeve 43 in which the enlarged shank portion 18 of the knob is be expanded when serves to reinforce of the knob in connection with the door. will be understood that while I have shown certain details of construction forvcarrying my invention into effect and the use thereof in connection with a specific knob construction, that I am not necessarily limited to these details nor to the use herein shown and described, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be'made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my what I claim as new and by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the door knob of a motor vehicle door, of means for retaining said knob against displacement in the door and for preventing rattling thereof comprising a part secured to the door and provided with a spring seat, a shoulder on the shank of the knob forming another spring seat between which and said first named spring seat is mounted a coil spring and an escutcheon plate secured to the door outwardly of said part and which serves to limit the inward movement of'the door knob in the door, and a lock washer mounted on the shank of the door knob inwardly of said escutcheon plate and cooperating with said plate to retain the door knob against displacement in the door.
2. The combination with a door knob of the class described, the shank of which is provided with a recess, of an escutcheon plate provided with a part adapted to enter the recess of said shank, a ring member mounted in said recess and cooperating with said escutcheon plate for retaining the knob passed, and this sleeve the m0I1ntlII1g t invention, desire to secure against displacement, and means for holdmg said knob under tension escutcheon plate.
3. The combination with a door knob of the class specified provided with a shank one end portion of which is reduced to form an integral shoulder, means mounted in the door and upon said shank and cooperating with the shoulder of the shank for placing said knob under tension to prevent the rattling thereof, and a split ring mounted upon the shank of the knob for holding the same against displacement in the door.
4. An anti-rattling attachment forthe knob of a door comprising a part adapted to be secured to the door provided with a spring seat, the shank of the knob being reduced and provided with an integral shoulder between which and said spring seat is mounted a coil spring, an escutcheon plate mounted in connection with the door and. cooperating with the shank outwardly of said reduced portion to limit the inward in said movement of said knob and the shank thereof, and means mounted in connection with the shank of the knob and cooperating with said plate for retaining said knob against displacement in the door.
5. An anti-rattling attachment for the knob of a door comprising a part adapted to be secured to the door and provided with a spring seat the shank of the door knob being reduced and provided with an integral shoulder between which and said spring seat is mounted a coil spring and an escutcheon plate mounted in connection with the door and cooperating with the shank outwardly of said reduced portion to limit the inward ll movement of said knob and the shank thereof, and a lock washer mounted in connection with the shank of the knob and cooperating with the escutcheon plate for retaining said knob against displacement in the door.
