DOOR HANDLE.

This invention relates to door handlesand is intended more particularly for application to automobile doors. The object of the invention is to provide a simple con struction whereby rattling of the post or knob sleeve will be prevented. One embodiment of the; invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

The knob spindle 1 is rotatably mounted in the door and controls the latch in the usual manner, the end of the spindle being connected to the handle or knob 2 in any approved manner. At a proper distance inwardly from the knob or handle, shallow transverse recesses or notches 3 are formed in opposite sides of the spindle, and a short distance inwardly from said recesses or notches, a groove 4 is formed around the spindle, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. The outer end of the post or knob sleeve 5 is fitted to the knob or handle 2 and its inner end is given such conformation as to de-- fine an annular shoulder 7 against which the escutcheon plate ,8 bears, the post surrounding the spindle between the. knob and the post there are two opposite inwardly projecting lips or flanges 9 which are adapted to engage in the notches 3 in the spindle. The escutcheon plate is secured to the outer side of the door in the usual manner and engages against the shoulder 7 ofthe post in such manner as to permit the post and spindle to rock easily when the knob is turned. A coiled expansion spring 10 is disposed around the spindle in rear of the escutcheon and bears at one end against the escutcheon and at its opposite end against a washer 11 supported by a slotted washer 12 which is engaged in the groove 4 so as to be held thereby, this spring serving to maintain the escutcheon in abutting relation to the post. 7 p
The handles of automobile doors are turned or rocked to release the latch and are also pulled outwardly to open the door. The
escutcheon spring tends to prevent relative endwise movement of the knob and spindle in the door but, in the construction now generally employed, the post movesilongitudinally and frequently becomes stuck in position out of contact with the escutcheon or the knob so that it rattles badly. 'With myconstruction, the inner end of the post is positively engaged with the spindle so that it cannot. move relative thereto and, therefore, cannot become loose when a pull is exerted upon the knob or handle. Moreover, as the inner end of the post is. positively connected with the spindle, the pressure of the escutcheon is taken ofi the handle and is carried entirely by the spindle.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I T -1. The combination with a spindle, and a knob thereon, of an escutcheon plate loosely engaged around the spindle, an abutment on the spindle in rear of the escutcheon plate, a hollow'post surrounding the spindle between the knob and the escutcheon plate and having its outer end engaged with the knob and its inner end positively connected with the spindle, and a spring between the escutcheon plate and the abutment on the spindle holding the escutcheon plate in contact with'the inner end'of the post.
2. Thecombination with a spindle, and a knob thereon, of a. post fitted at its outer end to the knob and having its'inner end positively connected with the spindle, an escutclibn, and yieldable means holding the escutcheon against the inner end of the post. i
3. The combination of a spindle having notches in its opposite sides, a knob on the outer end of the spindle, a post enclosing the spindle between said notches and the knob and provided at its-inner end with lips engaged in the notches in the post an escutcheon fitting loosely around the spindle and bearing a ain'st the inner end of the post, and yiel able means housed by the escutcheon for maintaining the engagement 10 between the escutcheon and the post.
