Thisfinvention relates to `an escutcheon plate `for door locks and the like and especially to means for securing the escutcheon late against removal with relation to' the oor and the lock housing.
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and voperation of securing mechanisms of the character described; to provide a mechanism which' permits an escutcheon plate to bereadily and quickly attached to a door lock and rigidly secured when apphed; la mechanism vwhich also permits easy removal of the escutcheon plate for inspection, repair of the door lock, etc.; a mecha- -'nism which eliminates the use of exterior screws and like fastening means; and furthermore a. mechanism of this character which is spring actuatedv and as such prea0 vents loosenin or rattling of the' escutcheon plate 'and acci ental release of the same.
One form which my invention may assume isaexemplied in theY following Y description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is an edge view of a door partially in section 4showing theY application of the invention.' v f Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the l0 plates employed in connection'with the door lock housing and the spring, said view also showing the spring actuated latchwhereby the `escutcheon plate is secured.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the escutcheon late. V y p Referring 'to/the drawings in detail, and particularly to Fi s. land 2, A indicates an ordinary door, 2 t e latch'plate, 3 the latch by which the door islockedl or unlocked, 4 the lock housing, 5 and 6, the exterior escutcheon plates enclosing the lock housing, 7 the door lock spindle, and 8 the knobs whereby the spindle is turned. The lock housing employed Iin this instance also embodies a clamping plate such as indicated at 9. This plate engages one face of the door and it' serves the function of securing the lock housin 4; `that is, apair of screws is carried by 51e plate 9 and these screws have a threaded enga ement with the housing 4, thus securing the same against removal.
, The plate 9 is merely a clamping plate and the present invention is restricted to means.
for securing the escutcheon plate 6 with relation to the lock housing or, in other words, the late 9. l likT e plate`9, as shown in Fig. 2, is disk e vided with a centralf bearing 11 through whlch the spindle 7 extends, and it is also provided with perforations through which the screws 10 are passed. Formed inthe lower edge of the plate 9 is a recess 12 and secured to the exterior face of the plate as indicated at 13 is a spring latch 14. This latch exerts an upward pressure in the direetion of arrow a (see Fig. 1) and it-coand circular in formation. It is Aprooperates with the recess 12'to vsecure the. T
escutcheon plate, 6. The escutcheon plate mayhave any shape desired but, itis more or less essential that it be provided with an annular inturned vflange Such as shown at lwhich adapted to embrace the outer edge orperiphery of the plate 9. The lower portion of the annular` flange 15 is bent in- Wardly as indicated at 16 and as such forms a hook like'member which isy adapted to engage the recess 12. The center portion of the escutcheon plate lis out away as at'l7 to inturned' flange portion 14 with the recess 12, and then pressing it inwardly over the latch -14. The latch thus passes through the lrecess 18 andan interlock is formed which secures the escutcheon plate to the clamping plate. The knob 8 may then be applied and.
the entire operation of installing the lock is completed. Y,
A11 escutcheon plate which is secured in the manner here described is constantlyA held in position by the tension of the spring latch,
and also by the interengagement of the hook v 16 with the recessv l2. As this is the case it can readily be seen that rattling and loosen- A n escutcheon plate is therefore pro-l ing of the plate cannot take place as it is constantly held in place b the upward tension of the s ring latch. he late is quickly and readl y applied when t e lock 1s 1nstalled, and it may just as readily be removed if it is necessary to inspect or repair the lock as it is only necessary to depress the latch 14 by the linger and to wedge the plate off the annular ilangeof the plate 9 b means of a screw driver or the like. e fastening means here employed is of further importance as it eliminates the use of exterior screws. The ornamental a pearance of the plates is thus im roved, an the entire Structure is given a p ain and substantial appearance.
While the fastening means here shown is more or less specifically illustrated, I wish it understood that various changes in form and proportion may be resorted.to within the scope of the appended claims; similarly, that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be such as the' experience an judgment of the manufacture may dictate or various uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to securely by Letters Patent is- 1. .The combination with the housing of a door lock and an escutcheon plate therefor,
.of a hook like member on the escutcheon plate engageable with the door lock housing, and a spring actuated latchin member cooperating therewith to secure t e escutcheon plate on the housing.
2. The combination with the housing of a door lock, of an escutcheon plate forming a cover therefor, said late having a flange formed thereon whic surrounds and embraces the lock housing, a projecting lug on the housing, an intel-engaging member formed on the escutcheon plate, and a spring latch carried b the housing and engageable with the escutc con plate to secure the same against removal. l 3. In a lock of the character described, circular plate forming a portion of the lock housing, a circular shaped escutcheon plate forming a cover therefor, said plate having an annular flange formed thereon embracing the lock housing plate, a lug on the flange of the escutcheon plate adapted to interlock with the lock housing plate, a notch formed in the escutcheon plate near the center portion thereof, and a spring latch carried by the lock housin plate and adapted to project throu h sai notch to engage and secure the escutc eon plate.
4. In a lock of the character described a lock housing, a central hub portion thereon, an escutcheon plate forming a cover `for the lock housing, said plate q'having a central openin formed therein in alignment with the hug on the lock housino, and a spring latch-carried by the hub and adapted to engage the peripheral edge of the central opening in the plate to secure the same to the lock housing. l
