UNITE 'CH'ARLES E.QTOHNSONgOF'NEWZBRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, :A'SSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN HARDWARE CORPORATION, OF NEW :BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Look, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices above mentioned, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a lock in which the bolt can not be moved by force applied at its ends.
One form of lock embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the object's herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the lock case with the back plate removed, parts being broken away to show construction, and the bolt being thrown. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the bolt partially moved and the key being shown and out in cross section. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but with the bolt in its rearward position.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the back plate and 6 the case of my improved look. A bolt 8 having an actuating leg 9 and a locking leg 10 is 'slidably mounted in the case to be actuated by the bit 11 of a key 12 that engages a notch 13 in the leg 9.
The bolt 8 is positively held against endwise sliding movement in either direction so that it can not be moved until released by the key, in the construction herein shown by a lug 14 engaging within openings 15 in the wall of the lock case, and this lug being preferably formed at the end of the leg 10. A spring pressing against the leg 9 forces the lug 14 into the openings 15 when, in the sliding movement of the bolt, the lug reaches said openings.
In operation the bit 11 of the key moves against one of the releasing sides 1 of the notch 13, shifting the rear end of the locking Specification of Letters Patent.

bolt and disengaging the lug 14 from one of the openings 15, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The rotation of the key slides the bolt until the lug 14 arrives opposite the other opening 15 when the spring 16 shifts the bolt laterally and forces the lug 14 into the other opening 15.
While I have shown and described herein a satisfactory form of mechanism for accomplishing my purpose, this may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet be within the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claim- 1. A case, a bolt movably mounted in the case and having branching legs, said bolt projecting through an opening in the case and being held against lateral movement therein, holding means carried by one of said legs to lock it against endwise movement, means to engage said holding means to cotiperate in the locking operation, means upon the other leg to receive a key for actuation of the bolt, and means to force said locking parts into engagement.
2. A case, a bolt movably mounted in the case and having branching legs, said bolt projecting through an opening in the case and being held against lateral movement therein, means carried by one of said legs to lock it against endwise movement, means to engage said holding means to cooperate in the locking operation, means carried by the other leg to receive a key to move the bolt laterally to disengage said locking means, and means similarly carried to move the bolt longitudinally.
3. A case, a bolt movable laterally and longitudinally within the case, legs branch ing from the bolt, means acting against one of said legs to force the bolt laterally in one direction, means upon the other leg to lock the bolt against endwise movement in either direction, and means to engage said holding means to cooperate in the locking operation.
4. A case, a bolt slidable within the case, legs branching from the bolt, one of said legs having on its inner edge a surface to be engaged by a key to move the bolt laterally the case and the first rnentioned leg to force and another surface to be engaged by a key said 111g into engagement with said opening.
to move the bolt longitudinally, the other CHARLES E. JOHNSON. leg having on its outer surface :1, lug to en- Witnesses: v
