Be it known that we, E'rHnLBeR'r A. Moolen and VAL'ruR H. HART, citizens of the United States of America, residing' at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to bolts for securing sashes, doors, or other movable bodies; and it has for its object the provision of a simple and improved construction the parts of which may be formed of sheet metal at minimum expense.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in connection with a bolt of the kind mentioned, of a bow-spring having' lugs litted in the channel of the bolt, said spring serving' to secure the bolt against movement upon its base-plate except when actuated to shoot it back and forth.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a base-plate having' keepers and a bolt proper having' a lug either stamped out of the metal or made separatetherefrom, said lug being located between the keepers and serving as a stop to limit the advancing and retracting movements of the bolt.
1n the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved bolt. Fig'. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottoni plan view of the bolt and its base-plate. Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal vertical section of my improved bolt, showing the spring for ordinarily holding the bolt against movement. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a similar section on line 6 6 of said Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a base-plate of ordinary form provided with keepers 6, shown as riveted to the base-plate at 6, or they may be integral therewith, if preferred. In this baseplate are formed perforations 7 for the reception of usual devices for securing the bolt to its support.
Designated by the numeral 8 is the bolt proper, which is formed by stamping from sheet metal to the channel shape indicated in cross-section in Figs. 5 and 6, has a closed end S and a iinger-grasp or handle 9 of the full width of the metal and bent inward until its end substantially rests against the back of the bolt. Located on this channeled bolt is a stop-lug or projection 10, which is shown formed from the metal of which the bolt is made, although this is innnaterial, for it may be detachably secured thereto. This lug or stop 10 is located between the keepers or bearings 6 and serves to limit the movement of the bolt 8 as it is shot forward and backward.
Designated by 12 is a spring' of slightlybowed form, the back of which rests upon the base-plate 5, said spring being' provided with short lugs or tenons 1:2 at its ends, which enter the channel 13 of the bolt, and thus serve as a means for holding the spring' in place upon said base-plate 5, the ends of said spring adjacent to the tenons 12 bearing against the walls of the channel or slot 13 of the bolt proper, 8, and the spring' thus serving to sccure the bolt against movement except when shot forward or rearward.
In assembling' the parts when constructed as shown the bolt proper, 8, andthe spring' 12 are first placed in position, with the end of the bolt entering the forward keeper 6, and the rear keeper is then placed upon the bolt proper and is riveted in place by force applied to the tenons or lugs 6 thereof.
Our invention is not limited to the exact form, size, or proportions of the parts shown, for various modifications may be made with out departure from the spirit thereof; nor is it limited to any particular manner of forming the keepers (S or of securing them in position upon the base-plate 5.
No claim is made in the present application to the combination. with a base-plate, of a channeled bolt having a channeled shank and a linger-grasp, for such subject-matter is illustrated, described, and claimed in our application iiled August 20,1903, Serial No. 170,154.
