a citizen of the United States, residing at Buifalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following issp e-cificationl 1 This invention relates to a lock which is more particularly designed for holding window sashes in position but which may also be used for. a varietyof, other purposes wherea. small and compact lock is required which can be quickly shifted into an open or closed position without} the use ofa key.
It is the object of this invention tofprovide a lock of this character which is simple and durable in construction, eflicientinvop eration and composed of few partswhich can beproduced and assembled at comparatively lowv cost. 7

In its central part the 'yoke is provided with an opening 16 whichis constructed to form front and rear thrust shoulders 17 1.8 which" are arrangedvertically or perpendicularly to the line of travel of the yoke. At
the corresponding ends of the thrust shoulders, preferably adjacent to the lower ends thereof, the opening '16 is Constructed to form a stop shoulder '1-9 which isv of curved concave form.- Within this opening of the {yoke is arranged a rotatable eccentric 20 which is pivotallyimounted on the casing and whereby the yoke isf'shifted lengthwise in the casing. Although the movement of the-yoke may be efiectedsolely by operationof the eccentric shifted fully intoits rearmost position. The
preferred means for this purpose comprise two springs 21, 21 arranged within the easing above and below the guide shank and each engaging its inner end with the rear edgeof the yoke and its outer end with the innerside of the adjacent rear guide flange. By means of these springs this lock may be utilized as a spring catch so that by withdrawing or retracting the locking bolt upon turning the eccentric back slightly and then againreleasin'g the same the yoke and locking bolt will be again projected into their operative position by the springs 21. By this means this look may be utilized not only as a positive lock in which the bolt may be held either in its pr'ojectedor retracted position but may also be utilized "'asa spring catch. 7 a I Any suitable means" may be provided for pivotally mounting the eccentric on the cas ing but the meanswhich are shown in the drawings arepreferably designed to also formthe connection between the body and rear .wall'of the: casing so that these parts will not becomedismembered when the lock is not mounted. The preferred means for this purposewhich are shown in the drawings comprise a shaft having a flat sided central-part 22which engages with the correspondingly shaped opening 23 in'the eccentric, a round rear part 24: which turns in a bearing opening 25 in the rear wall of the easing, a round front part 26'which turns'in af bearing opening 27 in the front wall of the-casing, anda handle, fingerpiece'or button 28 arranged on the front end of the shaft outside of the front wall of the casing.
This handle and shaft are preferably con-' structed from a single piece of metal by casting or otherwise. As the round parts 24, '26 of the shaft are on opposite sides of the square central part which carries the eccentricthe latter is reliably mounted on the casing so that the same will not tip to one sidejand bind but-is always free to turn in one direction or the other upon manipulating the handle on the exterior of the casing for this purpose. The flat sided central part of this shaft issomewhat smaller than the front round part thereof and somewhat larger than the rear round part thereof which permits this shaft to be passed successively through the front wall of the easing, then through the eccentric and then through the rear wall of the casing for the purpose of assembling the parts and-still enable this shaft and the handle to be made of one piece. After the parts have been thus assembled the rearend of the shaft is upset 'so as to form a head 29 thereon which engages with the rear orouter side of the rear wall. ;By this means the body and rear wall of the casing are held together by reason of the handle of the shaft engaging with the outer side of the front'wall and the rear head thereof engaging with the outer side of the rear wall, thereby avoiding the necessity of providing other means for connecting these parts of the casing and confining the working parts within the same.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that this look consists of very few parts compared with locks which accomplish the,
. same purpose and that these parts are all simple and durable in construction, the same are not liable to get out of order and are also I capable of being produced economically so that this lock can be marketed at acomparacent to corresponding lower ends of both thrust shoulders, and a clearance spacebe-" tween the upper ends of said thrustshoulders, and arotatable eccentric mounted on-the casing and adapted to move through said 1 clearance space and to engage its highest part with either of said thrust shoulders for shifting the locking bolt into an openor closed position and also adapted at either end of its rotary movement to standwith its highest part slightly beyond a dead center line drawn through said'thrust shoulders and the axis of said eccentric and to engage with said stop shoulder at either end of its rotary movementfor locking said bolt either in its open or in its closed position. c

A. lock comprisingxa casing having a injthe-casing and having alocking-lbolt, an eccentric for operatively engaging said yoke for shifting the same and provided witha flat sided opening,fand means for turning said eccentric comprising a shaft having a flat sided central part engaging with the opening-of the eccentric, a round inner end turning in the bearing opening of the rear 'wall and a round front end turning in the to corresponding lower ends of both, thrust mounted on said casing and operatively enbearing opening of thefront wall, and a wall.
