T0 all whom t may] concern Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM M. DIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove City, 4inthe county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is aspecification.` i

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks, and more specially to that class designed for use in connection with doors, but it is to be understood lthat I am not to be limited to such use,but may employ the lock for any purpose to ,which the various parts thereof will adapt themselves.

An object of this invention is the provision of a lock which includes a spring actuated locking bolt and means for retaining the said bolt in its locking position, against any undesired displacement.

A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 4` is a detail view of the locking pin. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the key. Fig. 6 is a modified form of the lock.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference, the numeral 10 designates generally a portion of a door frame in which is mounted a door 11.

My improved lock is designated by the numeral 12, and consists of a plate 13, formed with a longitudinally extending housing 14 offset at one end as shown at 15 for a purpose to be later explained. In the lower portion of the housing 14, a locking bolt 15 is slidably located and is provided with a laterally projecting stud 16 which extends through a slot 17, formed in one wall of the housing, of said lock while eX- tending therefrom the opposite side of the locking bolt 15 and extending through a slot A. formed in the door is a similar stud B both of the said studs being equipped with Specification of Letters Patent.

finger pieces 18, by means of which the bolt 15 can be operated against the tension of the spring 19, which takes over a rearwardly projecting pin 2O formed upon one end of the bolt 15. This bolt 15 engages the channeled catch plate. 21 which is secured to the door frame 10 in registration with the before mentioned plate 12. The bolt 15 is formed in its upper side with a notch 22 one side of which slants rearwardly as shown at 23 and the other side forming a lateral shoulder 24. A locking pin 25 is journaled transversely within the offset portion 15 of the housing 14 and is formed intermediate its ends with an integral depending finger 26 arranged to engage the shoulder 24 for the purpose of holding the locking bolt 15 against any undesired movement in engagement with the channel catch plate 21. A' longitudinally movable locking bar 27 is slidably located within the offset portion 15 of the housing 14 and is formed with an inner beveled terminal 28, adapted to engage a notch formed in the locking arm when the said bar 27 is extended inwardly, to hold the arm against any undesired movement which would serve to release the bolt 15. This bar 27 is limited in its inward movement by the head 29 formed thereon which contacts with the rear end of the offset portion l5 of the housing 14. The forward end of the pin 25 is reduced as at 29 and formed with longitudinal grooves 30 for the reception of the lugs 31 formed upon the interior of the tubular key 32.

y The lock is operated as follows: When it is desired to lock the door, the key 32 is inserted through the opening 33 formed in the housing 14 and into engagement with the reduced end 29 of the locking pin 25. The key is thenl rotated which obviously revolves the pin 25, thus forcing the finger 26 into engagement with the shoulder 25 of the locking bolt 15, thus forcing the said bolt into engagement with the latch plate 21, this engagement being further assured by means of the spring 19 having tension upon the rear end of the said locking bolt 15 and coperating with -the finger 26 of the pin 25. This bar 27 is then slid forwardly until the beveled end 2S thereof engages the adjacent side of the finger 24 which prevents any movement of the finger when the bar 27 is in this position. This movement of the bar 27 will manifestly operate the lock without the use of the key in locking the door, as the beveled end 28 of the said bar 27 is` always in contact with the finger 26 and when the said finger is out of engagement with the shoulder 24, of the locking bar 15, the said bar may be slid inwardly and will gradually A may be operated from the inner or outer side of the door when the same is not engaged by the looking pin 25.

It should be understood in this connectionv that various minor changes can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that a lock is provided whichwill fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.

I-Iaving thus ldescribed this invention which I claim as new is:

In a lock such as described, the combination with a housing, a bolt slidable within said housing and movable through one end thereof, said bolt having a notch formed therein, a rotatable locking pin mounted in the housing, means forrotating said pin, a finger formed upon the pin for engagement with the notch in the bolt, a sliding locking bar movable through the housing and projecting through one end thereof, said bar having` a beveled end adapted to contact with the finger for preventing its displacement from the notch and retain the bolt against movement, and a head formed upon said locking bar, exteriorly of the said housing for manual manipulation of the bar.
