COMBINED L OCK AND LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G1 SrIArnR, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing atGrand Rapids, inthe county of Kent and State of l\lichigan,'jhaveinvented .certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latchesyand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device-v-emr.
bodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 a detail of the detachable inner plate of the housing; Fig. 4: an elevation of the inner side of the device with said plate removed; Fig. 5 a vertical section through the lock; and Fig. 6 a vertical section through the latch on the line a-b of Fig. 2.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents a portion of the casing of a refrigerator or other like structure; 2 a portion of the door of the same which overlaps the casing and is held tightly against the same by means of the latch.
3 represents the housing of the device adapted to be secured to the outer surface of the door 2.
4: is an outwardly projecting lug on the margin of the housing adjacent the edge of the door.
5 is a lever pivoted to the lug 4: and serving as a handle to manually release the latch and to open the door.
6 is an inwardly projecting arm integral with the lever 5, extending within the housing through an opening therein and engaging the upper wall of said opening to limit the inward movement of the lever 5.

{is aflatch member projectinglaterally frdnr-the side of the leverj5 nea'r'the pivot thereof and adapted to pass undera keeper 8 as the lever is swung outward, and to eng ge an inclined cam surface 9 on the keeper" to force the door into .close contact with the casing.
An oppositely inclined surface 10 "is provided on the keeper which when "the door is beingclosed engages the latch member 7 and forces the same downward and the lever 5 outward until the member 7 passes the 7 angle 'ofxthis keeper. V
To automatically force thedoor in clos contactwith 'thescasing a spring 11 within the housing; engages 'the underside of the arm 6 and yieldingly forces the same upward "along the inwardly inclined surface 9 and wedgesthedoortightly against the casing '11 To "lock-this latch 1 in closing position the arm 6'18"pl'OiltleClWvltll'QJI'GQGSS 6 and a [1ocking-plate12 isprovided'having a projection 21ad apted to enter :this recessand hold the arm from moving downward, thus preventing thelatch 'from'being released. "This plate carries this projection near one end and at the other end is pivoted on a screw 17 inserted in the back of the housing, which also retains the plate 13 which closes the side of the housing adjacent the door. This plate is held in place by a hook 20 at one end and by the screw 17 at the other end. The locking plate 12 is provided with a central opening 22 having parallel sides adapted to be engaged by a flat key 19 to shift the plate into locking and unlocking position. Th1s key is inserted in a rotative pin 18 having a slot therein to receive the key, this pin being journaled in the housing at one end and in the closing plate 13 at the other end.
To prevent the locking plate from shifting, the movable end of the same is provlded with a projection 15 which slides over an opposing projection 16 on the closing plate 13 and is yieldably held against the saldprojection by a spring 14 which sprlng yields to permit the projection 15 to pass the pro jection 16 as the locking plate s moved by the key to engaging or disengaging posltion.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a housing, an outwardly projecting lug on the housing, a lever pivoted to the lug, an arm on the lever extending within the housing, a
latch member extendinglaterally from" the lever nearthe pivot thereof, a keeper having an inwardly inclined cam surface slidably engaged by the latch member, and a spring in the housing engaging the said arm. to force the latch member into said engagement.
and to wedge the door to closed position.
2. In a device of the. class described, a
housing adapted to be attached to a door, a
lug projecting outward from the housing near one side thereof, a lever pivoted to the lug and havingvan arm extending through an opening in the housing and provided witha recess, a spring, in the housing engaging said arm, a pivoted locking pl ate in the housing and having a projection to engage the recess and an oblong opening, a pin 'rota-' ,tive in said opening in the plate-and provided with a slot "to receive a key to shift the plate.
3. In a device ofthe class described, a piv- L oted lever, an arm and a latch member projecting from the lever," a keeper-having an inclined surface slidably engaged by. the latch memberto force a door to closed position, and a spring engaging the arm to yieldably force the latch member into said engagementwith the keeper.
4:. In a device of the class described,a lever pivotedto swing downward, a latch 'member projecting laterally from the lever, "an arm projecting inward from the lever,-a
I keeper having oppositely inclined lower surfaces slidably engaged by the latch mem her, and a spring engaging the under side of the arm to yieldably force the latch member in contact with said surfaces.
5. In a device of the class described, a housing, a lever pivoted on the housing, an arm on the lever projecting into the -housing, a stop on the housing to engage the arm and limit the upward movement of the same, a spring engaging the arm oppositely to the stop, a latch member projecting laterally from the lever, and a keeper having an oppositely inclined under side slidably engaged by said latch member.
6. In a device of the class described, a lever pivoted'to swing downward, a laterally projecting latch member on the lever, a
keeper engaged by the said member, an inwardly projecting arm on the lever, a spring engaging the arm to swing the lever upward,
a stop opposite the spring to limit the upward movement of the arm, a pivoted plate having a projection to engage and hold the arm, and an elongated central opening and a rotative pin in said opening, provided with a stop to'freceive a key.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
