Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28,1916.
Application fii'a A ril 11, 1916. Serial No. 90,459.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I JOSEPH F. K e m, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vvarrensburg, in the county of J ohnsoii and State of Missouri, have invented re-wand useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention comprelien'ds the provision of a match box having a hinged cover adapted to be held closed in a peculiar manner, with a view of deceiving those unfamiliar with the construction, means being provided to prick the fin'""e'rs of such pen sons in an attempt to open the box.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction; combina tion and arrangement of parts claimed.
1n the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with the cover closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View therethrough showing the locking slide in operative position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the locking slide in an inoperative position. Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view looking from the bottom of the box.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing in detail 10 indicates a box of any suitable construction, embodying in this instance a bottom 11, front wall 12, rear wall 13 and end walls 14. Projecting rearwardly from the wall 13 adjacent the opposite ends thereof are knuckles 15 with which a similar pair of knuckles 16 carried by the cover 17 are adapted to aline for the reception of suitable pintles by means of which the cover is hingedly mounted on the receptacle.
Arranged within the box is a vertical par tition 18 disposed in spaced parallelism with respect to the front wall 12, and closing the space between these parts is a top piece 19. The partition 18 is cut away as at 20 to receive the adjacent end of a slide 21 carried upon the under side of the cover, and by means of which slide the cover is locked in its closed position. The slide 21 is arranged for adjustment within a guide 22, and has an offset terminal 23 which passes through the cut away portion of the vertical partition 18 and beneath the top tion.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. However I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated as various changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A match box, a hinged cover therefor, a slide adjustably mounted on the under side of the cover and adapted to cooperate with means on the box to, hold the cover in closed position, one end of the slide being disposed exteriorly of the box to provide a finger grip, to manipulate the slide, and
means for concealing said finger grip.
2. A match box, a hinged cover therefor, a flange secured to the front wall of the box and adapted to lie beneath said cover, a slide adjustably mounted upon the under side of the cover and having an offset terminal adapted to be positioned beneath said flange to hold the cover closed, the opposite end of the slide being disposed exteriorly of the box to provide a finger grip to manipulate said slide, and means for concealing the latter.
v 3. A match box, a cover hinged upon one wall thereof, a slide adjustably mounted upon the under side of the cover and a slide adjustably mounted upon the underside of the cover and adapted to cooperate with means on the box to hold the cover in closed position, one end of the slide projecting beyond the rear side of the box to provide a finger grip to manipulate the slide.
means for concealing said finger grip, and means at the front side of the box for pricking the fingers in an attempt to open the box fromsaid side.
, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH F. KUCERA.
