Description

Dec. 24, 192.9. l |,v| PE|RE 1,741,071
POCKETBOOK A I Filed Nov. 20. 1926 INVENTOR I f W ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Dec. 24, 1929 Application filed November 2f), 1926. Serial No. 149,700.
PATENT QFFICE The object of this invention is to provide a pocket book especially adapted for-containing, in separate compartments, both bills and coins, the article being of such size that it may readily be carried in the trousers pocket, and the separate compartments being closed in the special manner described below.
A further object is to provide an article lo including front and rear walls, an intermediate wall and compartments on opposite sides thereof, said intermediate wall including an upper extension for closing the inner compartment, and the extension carrying la' a flap for closing the outer Compartment, and serving for engagement by the hand when another fla-p above the main opening of the container is engaged by the other hand for the purpose of opening the device by exerting tension in opposite directions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1n the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pocket book.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective View, showing the manner in which the pocket book is opened when held between the thumb and rst finger of each hand, for the purpose of producing tension in opposite directions.
Figure L1 is a detail view showing the slight C' modification with reference to the manner of cutting the transverse opening, or forming the slit.
The device includes the main front wall 10, and the upper front wall member 11, the edge walls, or edge portions of the walls 10 and 11, meeting approximately at the main opening defined by the slot 12.
A rear wall 13 extends for the full length and full width of the article, and is secured to front wall members 10 and 11, in a suitable manner, as for instanceV as shown in the drawings, wherein a strip 111 constituting an edge spacing device is connectedwith the edge portions of oppositely located walls. This permits the stitching to be concealed along at least some of the edges.
An intermediate wall 15 separates the larger compartment 16 from a compartment between walls 10 and 15, and this intermediate wall includes an upper extension 17 adapted to project under the front wall 11 when the inner compartment is closed.
A flap 18 is secured by a line of stitching at 19 to the adjacent layer, at the point where the extension 17 may be said to begin, and this flap 18 terminates at the upper edge, or in Figure 2 at the right hand edge of the extension 17.
An upper flap 20 is connected with the front wall 11, by a line of stitching at 21, 70 the opposite edge being free for engagement by the thumb and finger of one hand, as in Figure 3, when the thumb and finger of the other hand engage the flap 18. Tension is produced on flaps 18 and 20, in opposite directions, for the purpose of opening the container or pocket book. The outer compartment between the walls 10 and 15 is closed by iap 18, and the larger compartment 16 is closed by the extension 17 and the adjacent projecting portion of flap 18, these elements connected by stitching as shown, projecting under the upper front wall 11, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The outer pocket is accessible without opening the inner pocket or compartment, and when the latter is to be opened, itl is convenient to place the finger designated 22 in Figure 3, under the flap 18, in which position it will serve to close the opening leading to the front compartment.
In Figure 4 I have shown a slight modification, in which the transverse opening or slit at 24 has its end portions deflected or curved, in order to avoid any lateral opening at t-he point where the flap extends inwardly, under the out-er portion, near the top thereof.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In a pocket book, a rear wall, a front wall 10G providing with the rear wall oppositely 1ocated pockets, and said front Wall comprising two sections having free edges approaohing each other and separated to provide a transverse slot, an intermediate wall providing compartments on opposite sides thereof. an extension carried by the intermediate wall and adapted to project under one section of the front wall, a flap carried by the extension and projecting over the free edge of the other section of the front Wall, said extension and Hap lying substantially fiat across the transverse slot, and extending lengthwise of the slot to form a closing member therefor and a second flap connected with that front wail section under which the eXtension projects.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ISRAEL L. PEIRCE.
